View Full Version : puffer - beginner
hi, i just got a freshwater puffer
i do not know what type, but its reddish/brownish, abstract-art
patterns
a friend gave it to me, seems that it ate few of his smaller fishes.
likes pretending to be a rock. aggresive mutha
also got this aquarium, do not know what size, probably around size of
widestreen 19"/20" CRT monitor
i probably need to get cleaner fishes. will puffer eat them?
I hope to get another puffer or two, and probably some other species of
fishes. Would that be a problem?
I don't think i can get snails easily to feed it to "trim" its teeth.
Are there alternatives?
thanks

===================================
Is this the fish? http://www.dwarfpuffers.com/ I never had any but a
roommate did. It was the nastiest fish in that it bit small chunks out of
the other fish. It had to be kept alone. She didn't keep it long as I
recall.

no other fish
clean the tank yourself
feed them small prawns and stuff with shells on maybe as a substitute
add salt
puffers are really not often true freshwater fish
and will suffer from fungus's and stuff if water quality is not well
maintained

There are good online resources:
http://puffernet.tripod.com/main.html
http://badmanstropicalfish.com/brackish/brackish.html
The most important thing to do right now is
to positively ID the puffer you have. Once
you know for sure what kind, you can look
up how to maintain it, possible tankmates, etc.
Some puffers can get quite large. I recently
gave away two Green Spotted Puffers that I
bought as Dwarf Puffers (incorrectly identified
by the fish store staff). Dwarfs remain under
2" in length at maturity; GSP's reach close to 7"
in length at maturity. Big difference!
