MTS and Filters

I've got a 10g that has tons of MTS in it, churning up the sand.... I've
recently noticed, that they're getting into the filter, and they literally
clean the filter... To the extent, there is no green gunk on it...

Is that weird or good?

I can only assume, that they are actually feeding off of the filter... if
that's the case, then I can only assume that they aren't 'harming' or
nullifying the filter.... Am an Ass for assuming?

I tend to let biodiversity settle into all the niches it wants to :o)
However MTS in filters can be a little problematic (you don't mention
what type of filter). As long as they all stay downstream of the pump
impeller, then that aspect is ok (they have very hard odd shaped shells
for impeller blades to deal with). If you are using a spray bar, then
they will quickly clog the spray bar jets. I wonder if MTS have an
appetite for bacteria? They have to be eating something. Do you have
sufficient fish-load that a reduction in your bacteria would actually
cause NH3/4 or NO2 to register on a test kit? Can you check?

Truth be told, this 10g is the tank that has the krib breeders in it, and I
tend to let things run their course as the babies get bigger, I'll get to
cleaning the HOT filter a bit more often... but in 4 months, this was the
first time I opened the lid, I was looking for the missing babies, and there
they were... along with 1000 specs of MTS on the filter, in the matting,
etc...

Since I've had the babies in that tank, I've not monitored anything, it's
moderately planted, and was recently thinned out to stock the 29g that was
hit with the BBA, now recovering nicely....

10g
AC 5-15 HOT filter
NO 18" 15W light
20lbs Black Onyx Sand
1 Red Crypt
15 Java Fern
4 Anubia Nana
3 Endo something or other....
2 Adult Kribs w/ 18 babies Marge and Homer... Homer's kinda slow right
now... he's been beat up... Thanks Marge....
3 Kuhlis
1 Albino Bristlenose, named goldie
6,425,778 MTS

I'll do those tests just for kicks, the water had been crystal clear, but
thinning the plants may have sparked some bacterial bloom or something,
either that or the bristlenose, who is a known digger, has scattered sand
into the water column... he's quite ugly/cute as he gets older... now going
on 4years... pretty neat I think...

The problem is when a buch of them start dying off inside the filter.
Well, it's a problem if there's a mass die-off anywhere in the tank,
but I think that's more likely to happen inside the filter since the
snails get trapped in there with little to eat. Such is the problem I
encountered a few months ago. My fish started dying and I was
wondering why until I openned up the canister and found thousands of
tiny MTS shells. I haven't had a problem since I cleaned out the
filter + water change.

You can attach a prefilter or cover the uptake tube with a sponge to
keep out the snails (and fry).

I have the Eheim prefilter, but that doesn't keep the snails out. I also
have a Seachem ammonia alert, so I'll know if there is a massive die-off
of anything. :)

You should of gotten her Dr. Laura's book.

Friend of mine got his new wife the book a few months before they got
hitched. Fast forward to 6 weeks ago (and keep in mind he works at an LFS):

Him: "Honey, there's this great 180g tank we just got in at work that I
want to get."
Her: (Looking up from the book) "Well, if you can find a spot for it,
and it will make you happy, go ahead."

This is a guy who already has over 700g of tanks in a single-wide.

Not necessarily. I find it that with regular cleaning of the pre-filter
I don't have to crack open the canister all that often. Maybe twice a
year? Perhaps not even that. I just wish they sold the removable part by
itself, it's rather fragile and it breaks after a while. Then you have
to buy the whole thing to get a replacement.
