View Full Version : Vampire Oto's

Not bloodsuckers, just like to hang out upside down on the underside of my
Pagoda stone hidey hole. What's up with that?

I had 4 Oto's in my 55 Gallon planted tank which were not keeping up with
the algae. Last week, I got 2 more oto's and an SAE and a Latius (I think
it is Crossocheilus Latius). Everyone seemed to adjust to the tank pretty
well, happy and eating. On Thursday, I noticed a dead Oto on the bottom. I
cleaned him out, and didn't think too much of it since everyone says they
tend die for no discernible reason. I just assumed that it was delayed
stress or some such. So, Friday when I get home I can only find 1 Oto. It
took me forever to find the rest of them, but it turns out they are all
lined up on the bottom side of a piece of Pagoda stone which is built up
into a hidey hole. They have not come out at all today.

They use to be relatively active, constantly eating the algae from the rocks
and glass, and swimming from one spot to another. They are acting very
different from the way they did last week. Now all but one of them has
decided to play vampire bat all day.

Todays water conditions:
pH: 7.0 (usually ranges from 6.6 to 7.0)
dGH: 5 (usually ranges from 4 to 7)
Ammonia: 0 ppm (never can find any since it cycled)
Nitrate: 5 ppm (highest I've ever measured is 10 ppm)

I do weekly 5 gallon water changes with water treated with amquel+, and a
capful of Kent's fresh water plant fertilizer.

Has anyone else seen this kind of behavior? Is something wrong with them?
Is this a symptom of some kind of disease? Are they depressed from losing a
friend?

Joe

p.s. These are the same Oto's who liked to school with my Brilliant
Rasboras. Maybe I just got the freaky Oto's from the wrong side of the
river.
