It looks like I may be moving about 400 miles from where I am. I have a 75
gallon tank with the usual community fish. Does anyone have any experience
on how to move them or am I out of luck? I have had most of the fish for
over 3 years, including 6 of the original 10 zebra danios I used to cycle
the tank. My plec is about 6"-7". I have a clown loach that is about 4" that
I raised from a baby. I really would hate to give these guys up...Please
help with some tips please!!!

Yeah sure you can do it.. Just place all the smaller fish into bags with
water from the tank. The larger fish like the pleco that can pucture bags. I
used large rubbermade containers, or something sturdy with a lid. Fill those
with water from the tank & put the fish in. It may also be a good idea to
get some stress stuff from the fish store to calm them down....... Make sure
the tank is completely empty when moving....
Anybody else?????

Get a big styro foam cooler to place the bags in to maintain temp.
Use warm-paks or cool-paks (ask at the lfs) as needed if weather is
extreme. If possible, have a smaller tank already set up at the new
place that they can go in while the main tank is being set up. Remove
your filter media and bag it just like the fish, most of the bacteria
will make it, and you may not have to go through more than a very
small cycle.

That is a full day's drive. Part of the problem is having a "home" to
put them in when you arrive. You don't mention what kind of weather
you will be encountering. If weather is ok, consider using 30 gallon
trash cans with plastic liners. Move the water from your tank to the
trash containers and your fish with it. Two would give you enough
water to start your tank at the new site. I would leave the sand in
the 75 gallon tank, and leave it damp. It will be heavy, but should
move ok. The tank will have far less weight than it would be with the
water in it. The plants can be moved with the fish.
Keeping the water temperature seems to me the biggest problem. If you
have a SUV then that should be no problem.
Sounds like a long day for you.
Another solution, buy a new tank and set it up in advance of moving
the fish. You always wanted two 75 gallon tanks, right?

That's easily the best advice. Have a cycled waiting tank waiting for
your arrival. The 2nd best is to have a waiting tank and you brought
your fish and filters (still wet, sponges in fish bags). If you can't
have a waiting 75g, then another way is to start moving your community
into smaller tanks at home, so the 75g is available to move in advance.
Even a 1 day advance is a tremendous help.

i have oscars. i moved my tank and started running water in it
immediately. i did save some original gravel from before move, it had
a bunch of nice slimy goop in it. changed the mech filter. and that
was it. i didn't have money/capacity to do anything else with fish,
they had been sitting in a cooler and a jar for a couple hours. other
than color change, that lasted a day they are now quite fine. no algae
bloom, no ammonia cloud. i am a bit rough/callous to most eyes but,
my experience has shown me these fish (in general) are much tougher
than the common belief. i like to learn about fish, and ask
questions, but not all common knowledge fits your own personal
experience.
