For you folks that have bred bettas, do you seperate them overnight? My
male and female are showing strong interest in each other. The female
has her vertical stripes and the male is chasing her around. She is
getting sort of beat up with some rips in her fins and I don't feel
comfortable going to bed with them together. (This is the female that
killed my last male when she jumped the tank divider)

Will seperating them overnight set the whole process back when I put
them together again tomorrow? No embrase has taken place up to this
point. Just a lot of showing off.

I had the same problem with a pair i spawned, its kind of your call type of
thing if you are really worried i would seperate them. If you do leave them
over night they could spawn and then he could turn on her being he will want
to keep her away from the eggs. I have seperated mine over night and just
put her back in the morning, do you have a lot of cover for her to hide?
How long have them been together, if its been a while and they have not
spawned yet you might want to give them a couple more days...If you have a
clear glass you could put in the tank for her so they can still see each
other that is what i do that way they are still able to see each other and
no one gets hurt, and it will give him some time to build a better nest and
get in the mood.

I know of some breeders that will say leave them together.
I personally do not. The get up a lot earlier than I do (seems like
before the sun, hehe) and anything goes awry, I would like to be there
to handle the situation, not snoozing in bed, or out of the house for
that matter.
I also prefer to be there for the spawning. That way I can remove the
female right away.
My daughter is insane about counting the eggs too.
She'll park her butt in front of the tank and count each egg. One by
one...no matter how many hundreds there are.
If she has to get up for any reason I am to assume the count, lol.
I think she'll get over doing this (hoping).
I have a pair right now in a spawning tank.
This pair is a good example of why not to just leave them.
The female decided to chew up her mate a bit. I saw no intention of her
backing down either, so I separated her again (in her hurricane lamp
glass - still inside the spawning tank).
She showed typical signals for spawning, but after being set free, the
male didn't show too much aggression at all. She took advantage of that
and asserted her dominancy.
Not a good situation for this pair to be in.
I'm now thinking of changing females, but I wanted to use this one as
she is a Crowntail.
The other female I have does have better coloring though.

Thanks for the feedback. I ended up separating them for the night and
resumed this evening. She was still all stripy when I got home from
work. She is running from him much less and sometimes goes under the
nest but he is showing quite a bit of aggression toward her and seems
more interested in building his nest. I'm going to give them another
hour or two and then I'm giving up for a few days at least. She will
need to heal. Her anal fin is torn badly.

I'm striking out left and right here. My african dwarf frog breeding
didn't amount to anything either. *sigh*
