View Full Version : 1-month tank, cloudy?

I have a tall 15g (15H) tank with an under-gravel filter. It's been
running a little more than a month. I put a couple of feeder goldfish in
it a couple of weeks ago. Things have been fine. I've done weekly
partial water changes and have scraped the glass a few times. The pH has
been steady about 7.4. I removed the comets and put a couple of mini
fancy goldfish in about 4 days ago (Siamese Dolls). The water still
tests fine, but it has gotten cloudy, like milky. When I do water
changes, I rake over the gravel/river-rock and vacuum it. Been feeding
once a day, pellets soaked in aquarium water. I haven't changed to
carbon cartridge yet. Any help appreciated.

That is known as "New Tank Syndrome". Depending on many factors, mainly
filtration, aquarium size and number of fish, the cloudiness may appear on
the first day or wait for several weeks before occurring. This is a normal
adjustment the tank must go though to cycle. The cloud is mostly bacteria,
(not harmful to the fish) You may want to check your ammonia and nitrate
levels. Hope this helps.

Patience my friend.... things will settle in shortly... until then, you can
begin your daily devotional reading at the krib... www.thekrib.com

BTW, goldfish need much bigger sized tanks... like 1 fancy per 10g... now
you're ok, but when they begin to grow, you'll be in trouble... hee heee...

I know the general rule of thumb is 1 fancy per 10 gallon, but the
original poster points out that the siamese dolls are dwarfs. I've seen
these discussed in other forums, and from what I gather, their adult size
is smaller than normal fancies, and the rule of thumb with them is <10
gallons per, so it seems to me that 2 in a 15 gallon is probably ok.

I've never even heard of Siamese Doll goldfish. It sounds like they'd be
pretty nifty looking, though. Tried to find a pic of one but came up with
nothing. Can anyone point me in the right direction?

Just curious,

I just put up one picture I took of my two Dolls.

http://www.adamgottschalk.net/siamdolls.html

It's not a very good picture because a) my tank is going through "new
tank syndrom" and is unusually cloudy at the moment, and b) they seem to
be extremely shy of the camera :-) You can get a good idea of their
looks. They've really grown on me, even just over the past few days.
Watching their water acrobatics is great fun.

When doing your gravel vacuuming, push the pipe down and don't rake
across. You might actually be doing too much gravel vacuuming to start
the tank off. With goldfish, that situation changes pretty quickly ;~).
The cloudy water is usually completely harmless, but keep an eye on your
NH3/NO2 and NO3. You might want to add a 2nd filter at some point. UGFs
do clog quickly with certain fish (goldfish, oscars, plecs etc), though I
think that you should be fine for a while. hth

As you can tell, there is a great difference between the fish in the
above pic and mine. The one above is, I guess, an albino. When I went to
look at the Dolls at the shop, I was pointed to a tank which had both
the fantail calico sort and the golden/red-eyed sort. I asked which were
the Siamese Dolls and was surprised when I was told all of them.

This is sort of what I was elluding to, that goldfish pollute quicker than
other fish, isn't it because of the thicker layer of slime coating??? can't
remember as well.... GF not my cup of tea, but they are cute...

Oh thank you. :)

Black Moor goldfish were my first love but I was put off by the size they reach
coupled with their reputation for being little swimming sewers. I may consider
goldfish again now that I know they come in 'mini'.

Now to just find anything about the bitty ones....

The industry guideline for biological filtration is 1g of water per inch
of fish (not including the tail) for most tropical fish, EXCEPT Oscars,
Goldfish and Plecs, where the standard becomes 3g of water per inch of
fish. It all comes down to the rate at which they _can_ consume food.

At work I have 1000s of GF, but I've never owned one myself. Some can be
quite endearing. They aren't an exception to the general rule that
bigger = more personality, and with their longevity, 15-20 (GF) to 75
years (Koi), they have lots of time to grow on you ;~) .

and I was worried about getting a russian tortoise, max life 125 years...
I'll put in my will that whoever happens to be living at the time, inherits
our beloved pet, Molly Sims... the russian tortoise... If that day comes, we
could put a clause that nobody gets any money unless they house, care for,
and keep the tortoise until the ripe age of 125 or death by natural
causes... the look on their faces would be somewhat priceless...
