I have read many posts by aquarists about using crushed coral in fresh
water (especially African Cichlids) for maintenance of proper KH and
ph.
In my experience this is a poor method, as the calcium and other
elements such as magnesium are very slow to disolve out of the coral.
I prefer adding the elements into the aquarium directly (sort of like
adding wood ash to a compost pile to add minerals to it). I prefer
bio-available calcium glucanate for Marine or Wonder shells for
freshwater. (there are other good products out there and wonder shells
can be used in Marine aquariums too, although just not my first
choice).
