Hi to everyone. My partner bought me some fancy goldfish recently as a
wedding present, and I joined this group because I am already enthusiatic to
learn as much as I can, and have learnt tons merely reading postings. Any
advice on feeding and tank maintenance would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Welcome to the group.
Most of these folks will help you out a lot. My three are doing just fine
as the result of learning from them. Enjoy!

I would start out with diet; make sure to feed your goldfish a balanced
diet
A proper Koi and goldfish food starts with quality aquatic based
ingredients. Fish derive their energy from fats, not carbohydrates
(although cereal is needed as roughage). also the ammino acids that
make up proteins should be ones that can be easily metabolized by fish.
Soy proteins and feather meal that are used by many foods are of poor
quality. An analogy I used in another blog to compare ammino acid
(protein) quality is this: You can achieve the protein analysis of many
pet foods with a pair of leather shoes, yet leather shoes are for the
most part, made up of undigestable proteins that will eventually lead
to renal (kidney) failure in fish.
It also should be pointed out that no one food should be fed alone
(including Sanyu). A balanced diet for goldfish should also include
Spirulina Flakes, and Brine or Mysis shrimp (which have a natural
laxative for goldfish). Frequency of feeding is also important, think
of goldfish as under water horses, they are regularly grazing, unlike
say a lion. The point is that goldfish have long digestive tracts, not
unlike horses, and if not kept full, they can develop gas (that is also
why the brine shrimp and spirulina are important). Try and feed your
goldfish at least two or more times a day (if more often, feed less per
feeding).
There is a lot more to learn about goldfish care, from filters to
cleaning.
Here is a site with a lot of helpfull links:

Thats great thanks. I was beginning to worry about the cloudiness of the
tank but will follow your advice. Alison

GF have short digestive tracts and no stomach at all. they graze all day on high
protein high fat stuff. it is usually the fancy GF that have gas or intestine
problems and floating. never give fancy GF dry food or too much at a time. a lot of
people are using gel foods so it is small, wet and wont get sucked into the filter
immediately. Ingrid

I do agree with soaking all dry foods so they are moist, but there is
nothing wrong with feeding a quality dry food such as Hikari, Sanyu and
others that expand in the intestines, also spirulina is an addition to
a balanced diet. I strongly disagee with the high protein grazing, that
is contrary to everything I have read about the evolution of the
goldfish we now know as pets from their wild cousins which have a
primarily herbivorous diet (and my experience also).
I have turned around shipments of sickly "feeder" goldfish with proper
feeding and excellent water conditions (multiple filters, uv
sterilization).
Here is just one (of many) site about the history of goldfish:

Good stuff.
I have been using TetraFin - Goldfish Crisps. They seem to grow quite
fast if I feed them this stuff. I forget quite a lot, and they seem ok
grazing on the plant life - a green algae type weed seems to grow quite
readily in the pond. They don't grow in size (noticeably) unless I feed
them the food though.
I hope this food is ok for them - peoples opinion?

unfortunately, he repeats the myth that GF and koi are herbivores. they arent.
their main food is small critters. they grow best and thrive on high protein, high
fat diets. in fact, they cannot digest carbohydrates very well at all.
in a pond algae is the basis of the food chain and the little critters are found on
or near algae. so GF and koi graze the algae to get the little critters. they do
eat mosquito and other kinds of larvae, and root in the mud for worms and larvae.
