Hi.

I have 10 threadfin rainbows. I *love* these fish, and since I haven't
hit my stocking limit (I have about three dozen pygmy fish in a 75 gallon
tank), I'm thinking of actually adding maybe 4 or so more.

I'm not going out of my way to try to get any of my fish to breed, but if
nature takes its course and they decide to breed, I would be pretty
excited.

So, my question is, are my threadfins likely to breed? I'm not quite sure
how to sex these fish, so I have no idea what my M/F ratio is. Is it as
simple as the ones with the longest of the "threadfins" are male?

Any info / advice appreciated.

The July issue of Aquarium Fish Magazine has a nice article of rainbowfish.
A couple of quotes from the threadfin description..
"Males of this fish develope long lobes to their dorsal and anal fins that
typically are as long or longer than the fish itself."
"When courting, they "dance" in front of the females, spreading their fins,
so they appear more than double in size."
The article also mentions that one male-two females tends to work out best
for breeding. Good article.. You should pick it up when it comes out...

"Did you find the gun?"
"Yeah.. it was in Buffy's underwear drawer. She has nice things."
"Show me."
"Well, I didnt take 'em but there were thongs and regular underpants..."
"Show me then gun!"

Hey Chris

The males are spectacular compared to the females. I think you have all
females if you can't tell the difference yet. The males are much darker and
have streaks of red in them with long black flowing fins. They will spawn
readily in a tank that has no other species in it. They really need to feel
secure. The spawn LOVE to swim in floating plants (the fry are always at the
surface), horwort is perfect for this. They are great little fish, gotta
luvem, good luck and happy fishing!
