View Full Version : My poor Betta saga

September 16th 06, 11:08 PM
Well I posted a message on here awhile back about my sick betta that
I dont know what's wrong with it. I still dont but he's still alive
after a month or so. He still has white patches on his skin and I am
not sure if its fungus or bacteria. His fins are all still there so
I'm confused anyway...

When I noticed he was failry sick I bough another smaller fish bowl for
him (1/2 gallon) so I can add medicine and change his water more often.
I had him in Jungle anti fungus which is blue for a couple weeks but
the white is still there. Now I have him in kanamycin which is clear
and I've had that in there for 3 days.

The white patches on his body are still there but he seems a little
more active then when he first started gettign sick. I'm starting to
wonder if I should stop medicating him for awhile and see what happenes
cause he's been in one medication or another for awhile now.

Also He still doesn't eat like he used to when I first bought him about
3 or 4 months ago. He'll eat a flake or so when I feed him then he'll
go to the bottom of the bowl and sit there for awhile digesting, and
maybe eat a bit more but he isn't gobbling them all up like when I
first bought him. (Oh by the way he wont touch freeze dried blood
worms, doesn't like them)

He'll swim around some, but a lot of time he'll be at the bottom of his
bowl. Also every once in awhile I'd use to put a mirror in front of
him and he's flare up like a normal betta. I figured that might cheer
him up. However about a week ago he stopped flaring at the mirror.
When he sees himself he goes to the bottom of the bowl and stops
moving. Like he is scared of himself.

I feel so bad I wish I knew what was wrong with him. Maybe he is just
getting old or something. I bought him like 4 months ago but it was
from a bet store so who knows how old he was then. Well I appriciate
any comments you have on my poor betta and I hope he is back to his old
self when I first bought him soon.

Just in case it's some kind of parasite I would treat it with QuickCure.
Give it a few days off from the other meds before trying QC if you do decide
to use it.

Hi there Nathan.
Is there any way you can send me a clear, digital pic of this Bettas
"white patches"?
Being that he's been medicated for a long time and without any change,
I have to wonder if this is a simple color morph.
It's quite common for a Betta to change color (depending on their
genes).
If you don't have a digital camera, ask to borrow a buddies if you can.
I need to be able to see what it is we're talking about.
You mentioned using Jungle "Antifungus". Is that the actual name of the
product?
I always recommend Jungle Brand's Fungus Eliminator, not Fungus Guard,
as it treats a wide variety of bacterial issues (which can look like
fungus to the untrained eye).
I ask because if he has a bacterial infection and it being treated with
a fungicide, it's not going to help him.
Also, you mentioned using a mirror for exercise, and him losing
interest in it.
Answer me this....
Was the mirror left all the time and he's simply bored of his
reflection now, or when you re-place it, he have no reaction what so
ever, or is he showing submission coloring..blanching out his color and
showing horizontal barring?
Hey...another good question....didn't think of asking before. Is he
showing horizontal barring all the time?
How is his body coloration? Faded or vivid?
Also, what is the water temp?
Without being physically in front of this fish, it will take a
gazzillion Q's and answers to help figure out a "not so obvious"
problem with a fish, so please answer all Q's and be patient with us
for asking so many or asking to repeat an already answered Q.
I for one am getting to be an old fart and wasn't born with much memory
anyway and it's not getting better with age, LOL. = )~
