View Full Version : Goldfish sent home as party favors

ARGH!
So I get home from running errands this afternoon and discover that my
daughter and son brought home 2 goldfish each from a birthday party.
ARGH!!!
Cussing loudly (that's 40 gallons worth of fish) I jet outside into the
back 40 and get 2 old 10 gallon tanks. I direct my daughter to start
cleaning them up using tap water.
Once she's knocked off the worst of the dirt, I betadyne them and rise 3
or 4 times with tap water.
Working from memory... cussing as I go...
1.5 tablespoons of aquarium salt
1 teaspoon NovAqua
1 teaspoon of AmQuel
Oh shoot, I've only got 25W, 50W and 150W questionable heaters hanging
around. Oh well, I'll do the best I can. The 150W goes in one tank and
the 50W goes into another.
Only one spare air pump and no spare air stones. Sigh. Trip to the pet
store ahead tomorrow morning.
Fish out of bags into a wider bowl so at least they can get some O2. Put
a towel around the bowl to darken it to reduce stress on the fish.
So at this point I'm waiting for the temps to equalize so that the fish
can go into the tanks.
WHY THE FRICK AND FRACK DO PEOPLE GIVE GOLDFISH AS "PARTY TOYS"!!!
Anyhow, if anybody remembers me (Hi Ingrid)(Gunther or NetMax still
around?)...
I'm back for a little while.

Update:
Well, this morning I have four booking goldfish. With luck they'll stay
happy and healthy.
Next step... getting those tanks cycled...
I have biowheel filters on my existing tanks, but the media is the wrong
size.
My initial approach will be to install new biowheel filters on the new
tanks and drop in a used filter cartridge.
I normally use AmQuel, so that should give me some breathing room.
Oye Vay! I thought I was done with this part of fishkeeping for a while...
Now I know how a guy feels who just sent his last kid off to college and
whose wife comes up pregnant a couple weeks later... ;-)
Comments? Suggestions? Sympathy?

Sympathy.
Note that the aquaria newsgroups were taken over by a group of squatters and
ruined over the last nine months.
I have not seen Netmax in well over 18 months to 2 years on here.
I'm here. the fastest way to cycle is with those foam things drop an airstone down
the middle. they get filthy fast and not suitable long term but...... a used filter
cartridge from an existing tank is superb.
try not to feed the gf much food and it will cut down on how much waste they make.
I still maintain a 100 gallon rubbermaid stock watering tank in the basement just in
case I suffer temporary brain death and get something. LOL. Ingrid

Netmax is over at The Freshwater Aquarium group. He is one of the
group owners and is still as knowledgeable as ever.

yea netmax is still around although more on mysterious boards and forums
than newsgroups or something
Unless it's extremely cold you shouldn't need a heater for the goldfish,
