View Full Version : Nice community fish for top-level of aquarium?

My long-established community tank is going to be needing a few top-dwellers in
the "near" future -- that level is currently inhabited by three old female
guppies (last male keeled over a few months back) and a lone long-finned zebra
danio that I somehow managed not to kill (I have seriously bad luck with zebras,
which is why this poor guy doesn't have any company).

The rest of the 30 gallon tank is inhabited by 6 Harlequin Rasboras, 5 Serpae
Tetras (both mid-tank dwellers), 4 Yoyo Loaches (bottom level), and 5 otos
("glass level").

Other than the zebras, I don't tend to kill off fish all that often.

Any top-dwelling favorites? Smaller schooling fish preferred..

In the past I've had some white hatchet fish that were very nice. Just be
careful, cause they can jump out... yes, I learned the hard way :-(

You realize you're already pretty close to the maximum number of fish a
tank that size can support? How big are your yoyos?

Well, the current tank *is* at the limit of what I consider reasonable (i.e.,
weekly water changes and bi-weekly gravel vac-ing keeps my nitrates under
10ppm), that's why I'm waiting for the 3 female guppies to go to fishie heaven
before I add additional fish (and I'd rather add smaller fish, like the size of
my Harlequins). The guppies were a mistake -- I bought some so-called
"Endler's" from some asshole on Aquabid, and it wasn't until they were pretty
far grown I realized they were just your basic guppies. Didn't have to heart
to euth a fish just because they weren't what I expected, so I just let them be.

The yoyos are about 2.5"-3". Not quite fully grown, but they are such slow
growers it's going to be a while before they put on another inch.

Frankly, the proof's in the pudding -- this has been a very healthy tank --
other than a bit of ich years back when I first established the tank (with a
couple of the Serpaes). Nitrates, pH, and KH are all stable and at reasonable
levels.

Looks like an interesting fish, but it's probably too big for my setup (max size
3"...given my fish loading I'd only be able to at two at most).
