Cloudy Water

I just set up my water graden and at the advice of the supplier, I added 3
50 lb bags of builders sand to the water. She told me to rinse it because
it has silt in it, but I didn't take her advice. The water is cloudy. Will
this clear up in time, if not, is there an additive that will remove the
murky look?

Unlikely as the murkiness is basically mud/clay probably. It will settle
but could still be a problem if there is much water movement. Of course
over the years silt will get in there anyway but I'd recommend you give
it the best start possible.

It can always take a year or three for any pond or water garden to get
clear as it takes time for an environmental balance to establish.

If you've only just set it up and don't yet have plants, fish or
wildlife I'd recommend you do the cleaning process now, ie stir it up,
pump the water out, put in new water, stir up, pump out, and keep
repeating as many times as you can stand.

I noticed a little clearing yesterday. I think the silt will settle in time.
I don't want to spend the time or expense to drain the pond. I have plants
in it and I'm hoping they will help with the clearing. I set up a similar
pond a few years ago and never had that problem, but I believe I only added
one bag of sand, not three. I think the piump / filter will help to remove
some of it. Thanks.

I think the worst danger would be if the sand had any chemicals in it
(weedkillers). I don't know if this is likely but that it is a
possibility. If your plants are OK then it's probably alright.
