View Full Version : Advice Please on Flexible Liner Edge Treatment

I have constructed a wildlife pond using a flexible liner. The pond is
almost full now and so I need to do something urgently about finishing the
edge.
I had in mind that the flexible liner should upturn vertically for about an
inch all round the edge. My reason for this is that if the earth around the
edge of the pond is not perfectly level then it won't matter because the
upturn will compensate. i.e. I will be able to fill the pond right to the
edge (the bottom of the upturn) even if the surrounding soil is level to
within only 1 inch all round.
Am I being realistic? Is an upturn a useful option?

many thanks, Davy

That depends on your soil. Our soil didn't hold around the edge or berm but
started to sink in places letting mud run into the pond. The rock necklace
wouldn't stay in place either even with about 12" of liner over the berm
with a turned up vertical edge to keep run-off out. Do some research on the
net regarding pond edging. After 9 years we finally had to pull up the
liners and redo the edges with rebar reinforced concrete and pull the liner
edge over that. So far so good. We should have done it in the beginning.

Koi-Lo,
You have made me think of another point; the lawn flows down to part of the
pond - so I need an upturn to stop fertiliser and weedkiller runoff into the
pond?
I take you point about the need for a firm edge; so I will mortar building
tiles or paving stone under the flexible liner edge.
thanks, Davy

YES!!!!! We have our liner turned up about 3" and hidden in the rock
necklace. One rock in front of the turn-up, one behind it and a flat rock on
the top to hide the turned-up edge altogether.

That's good to hear. Don't make the mistake we did. Do it right the first
time. ;-)
