View Full Version : A REAL shock at PETCO

I swear this never happens.

So a couple of weeks ago I walk into PetCo and find they they have
stopped selling their bettas in the hideously small 6 oz cups and have
switched them to more economical 3 oz cups (about the size of the
smallest baby food jars) As anyone would be, I was sickened by what I
saw and was ready for a good argument, but my BF talked me out of it.
He says, "Let's just go, you can write a letter when we get home."
Against my better judgment I agree and go home and sit down to write a
complaint letter. (My first ever I might add) I tried to be
constructive so I told her WHY they were bad... i.e. too cold, too
small, WAY too much ammonia, etc. I also offered to come in a teach
the store employees all about proper betta care as a volunteer
service. I copied the letter to the "PetCo Customer Satisfaction
Team."

Well, three days later I get a call from the store's general manager.
She says she read my letter and immediately rectified the situation.
She said it was bad judgment on the part of the store and their live
stock is the most important thing to them. She said she had already
forwarded my letter to her higher ups and while she didn't think she
would be able to make any immediate changes to the standard 6 oz size
she would make sure they understood the dangers of these tiny cups.
She ALSO said if I ever saw anything in a PetCo I didn't like I could
contact her directly and it would be handled.

I was floored. And skeptical. I went back two weeks later to check up
and sure as s***, no more 3 oz cups on the shelves.

I couldn't believe I actually met a manager that cared about what
their customers had to say and did something about it. I was vary
pleased and thought I would share the news since WE almost never hear
these stories.

There *are* good people left in the world, and you and that manager
are among them. <bg>

That's Great... Maybe it'll push the higher-ups to do something, company
wide...

nice post. Kudos' to you and to that Store Mgr. Wonder if the Company will
follow it up and change that practice at all their stores.

Let's play devil's advocate and take a more cynical perspective. PetCo
is a pet shop. They are going to be __really__ sensitive about
allegations of animal abuse. A Customer Service manager's role is to
mirror your concern, exude sympathy and remove the problem from your
sight. This manager may or may not give a rats-behind about 3oz cups,
but she knows how to do her job.

This doesn't detract from the fact that someone made a ridiculously poor
decision (using a 3oz cup), and you got the right mgmt level to see the
problem, and hopefully mgmt reacts quickly to remove and prevent
re-occurrence, so bravo and well-done!

You should write a letter back to the manager praising him/her for the
superb customer service and thanking them for changing their policy.

I would also CC this letter of praise to the corp. office. It gives the
company a heads-up about an excellent manager. Plus it gives them a chance
to find out about the 3-oz cups. In fact, you could almost just print out
your post and send it.

Yeah, this is always a possibility, but since there is no proof all I
can do is give them the benefit of the doubt. My instinct is that she
was being sincere but there is truly no way to really know.

By the way Netmax, I checked out your website and was pleased to hear
of your "Betta Barn." I hope you continue to develop it and it would
be great to see sketches. (Although, being an Industrial Designer by
trade, I know how top secret designs can be before getting them
patented. My only advice is to sign and date every drawing and sketch
you do.)

Good luck with it.
