hi, i`d like to set up a native tank, I`d like to get perch if possible.

has anyone had any experience of this?

I have a 5ft tank on the way and enough filters etc to cover it, I just need
some help with the practicalities. Are there suppliers of perch or will i
have to catch one myself? what sort of food will it eat? If i do have to
catch one myself, then how closely will the tank water need to match its
native environment? bearing in mind I`m catching from a birmingham (uk)
reservoir will tapwater left to de-gas be okay? Are they terribly
territorial or could i put a couple of them in together? has anyone tried
breeding them?

Lots of questions i know, but as a fisherman (whos favourite fish to hook is
perch) I`d love to have one at home and don`t want to blunder into and risk
killing by my experiment.

etc.

I set up a perch tank a few years back. I was inspired by a small perch I
caught that would just not give up. After fighting with him to get him out
of the livewell in my boat and seeing him jump out of a 5 gallon bucket
twice. I figured he deserved a second chance. So I stuck him in my 55G
tank (recently vacated by an Oscar). No acclimation, no fuss. He must have
been the toughest yellow perch in the lake. I never convinced him to take
flakes, but he was pretty happy with worms, minnows, etc. He was eventually
rehabilitated, and returned to society, but I did keep him for several
months.

I'm not sure I would recommend this as a way to stock a fish tank. It was
really more of an expedient for that one really hard headed fish.

I completely recognize where you're coming from, however, any fish that has
been in one of your tanks should not go back to the wild. The worry is
that it will carry an invasive pathogen back to the wild population.

At the time it seemed the best choice. This is not a well thought out
project, more a spur of the moment decision. At the time I had a choice of
releasing him, or euthanizing him. I wish I had thought to look for an
adoption :-(. After saving him from the livewell once, I did not have the
heart to just destroy him after a few months in the tank. And, I certainly
was not going to turn him into dinner!!!

I hope he learned his lesson. I bet he never bit another rooster-tail
again.
