View Full Version : Growing java moss?

November 16th 06, 09:44 PM
I bought some java moss. Any reccomendations on how to grow it so I
can harvest it to put in other aquariums? I read somewhere that if it
attaches it self to soomething it will grow quickly? What's the best
thing to for that and where would I get some?

Thanks in advance.

I've tried sticking it under rock and actually tying it onto
driftwood....I add plant fertiliser to the tanks on their weekly
change....used to be Nutrafin but have now moved to Flourish Excel - it
makes no difference with the Java Moss...still grew with the
Nutrafin....might get an explosion with the Flourish.

Providing there is enough plant food in the tank (and maybe not - I've
never tried not adding plant food) the stuff should grow like crazy...in
no time at all you will be pulling it out of your filter inlet and
transplanting it....I've recently started an experiment of using it
instead of a tank backing in a 5 gall planted tank that I have....only
put it in a few days ago and already need to prune it....I originally
started with a minute clump - smaller than a ping pong ball....now it is
everywhere (and shame on me I'm also throwing some of it out).

Great place for fry :-) I also managed to end up with a Boesman Rainbow
after transplanting a piece from one active tank to a very quiet
one....must have had eggs attached....

I use those lava rocks to attach it to. Harvest as needed. I never found
it needed extra fertilizer to do well.

like the other posters said, rock and driftwood are good. if you can't
get it to stay in place, you can use a bit of nylon fishing line
(better) to tie it in place.

FWIW, I have Java moss (NOT willow moss) in 3 tanks. It does grow for me, but
not as fast as others have claimed. I haven't had to prune it yet and I
planted it about 3 months ago.

All the other plants are growing like crazy, even the anubias and crypts. I
do have hard alkaline water, maybe the moss doesn't like that.

I bought a ball of java moss about 2 years ago the size of a golf ball
and it has taken over all of my tanks. Some parts of the year it looks
better then others. (Fantastic in the summer). Mine grows well tied to
driftwood or just floating freely.

The original batch has grown to fill five tanks and I have had to throw
away masses of it because I had so much I couldn't give it away.

Don't worry, once you get your starter clump... you'll be well on your
way. ;-)

I had it for a while in a low pH tetra tank, it kept dying...

Then I moved a seemingly clean object to another tank. Well, if it
grows in the tank it gets eaten but it also grows on the damp in the
hood til it is all over the light and makes the lid live.... or drips
down into the tank... and in my low pH tank it slowly took hold when I
neutralised, it was all over the filter compartment which looked
pretty, but it got more choking...

After a few goes and having it die on me, I have now got to clean it
out every week or it takes over.

If you have neutral or alkaline pH, just tuck it onto / under something
and you will be well away.... give it time....
