I have a 10 gallon tank with 1 goldfish. I would like to put some
guppies in there. My goldfish is a 1 inch fantail. How many guppies
could I comfortably keep in my 10 gallon tank with the goldfish?

Well, the answer you don't want to hear is none.....guppies are tropical
and goldfish are cold water....even if you could wing it you are going
to run into problems....the 10 gall is too small for the goldfish - it
will grow....or alternatively be stunted and die early - sorry for the
bad news - you need a much bigger tank for the fantail....I know, we are
all educated to believe that goldfish are easy fish to keep and can be
kept successfully in a small tank - fallen foul to that one myself a
number of times in my early fishkeeping days.....

Your 10g with a heater could nicely support a decent number of guppies
if that is what you want....you could possibly add some other smaller
species that will not outgrow your tank (tetras, some smaller
cories...in fact you need to get the mix right but you could get a
reasonable mix of small fish in there) - the only real difference
between the goldfish and the tropicals is adding the heater....and the
tropicals, I learnt, are easier to keep (I shied away from tropicals for
years because I thought they were harder....in fact the opposite is
true).....

Hope this helps and hasn't been too negative

Honestly, I really don't have a bigger tank. We have a 20 gallon, but
its already in use. So even if the fantail is alone, it will still
outgrow its tank? The guy at the pet store said that he would be fine.
I'm confused now.

Bend over... Hmm.

Anyway, the short answer is zero.

Healthy well fed, well cared for goldfish get quite large. Also, guppies
are tropical and GF like cooler water. It's better to keep GF with other GF
or cool water, non-tropical fish.
