View Full Version : Twirling Tiger barbs

Earlier batches of affected small Tiger barbs dropped at a rate of 2 or 3
a day. Water is good, no symptoms (other than death). I keep my
shipments separate, so it didn't spread anywhere, but whatever it was,
only Tiger barbs seemed to get affected. Months later, (a couple of
weeks ago) I put a few survivors into my main Tiger barb species tank.
Yesterday morning, 1 casualty, by lunch 2 twirling (swimming sideways,
upside etc), by afternoon 4, by suppertime a dozen fish were showing
symptoms. I did an 80% water change before the end of my shift and I'm
afraid of what I will find when I get to work today. Other than the loss
of swimming orientation, no other symptoms. At very close inspection, I
did find some with a few Ich dots, so something might be festering in
there.
Looking for anyone with previous or similar experience, and hopefully
success at treatment.
TIA

What kind of thermometer are you using? If its a glass tube effect that
sticks to the inside of the aquarium glass then check out the sucker cup.
Some are hard clear plastic (these are good) and others are a kind of
green/blue rubbery type stuff. I had one of these and it literally rotted
into a fine paste which was polluting the water, can you believe ppl
actually sell this crap? Anyway, it could be that.

I have only had one 'bad' experience like that, some blue rams kinda did the
same 'disorientation' dance, and were dead within hours... turns out the
thermometer had a crack and the mercury got into the water...
That was the reason for such a quick demise... hope you get lucky....

I think I've seen that happen on old aquariums, but these are too new (15
months). I might be making some progress with the water changes and
medications, but I'm nervous. This is a really sweet tank, about 200
mature assorted Tiger barbs, 20 Rainbow sharks, and a big chunk of
driftwood surrounded by a lawn of Sunset Hygrophilia. Took me almost a
year to get it looking this way. The retail value is about $2,000 which
is nothing to sneer at either. There are still too many fish diseases
which are not curable, and ones we can cure are developing resistance.
Red - poisons would certainly be consistent with the rapid neurological
symptoms, so that's why I went with the large water changes. Even if it
was not toxins in the water, it would help thin out anything else in the
water column. My thermometers are not very old, so I'd expect that they
use coloured alcohol instead of mercury. Thanks for the help guys!

I can't help with a solution, but I can tell you I've had that same problem
with Tiger Barbs for the past year. It doesn't hit then all at once, it may
not hit for months at a time, but eventually, one or two would have that
problem. Maybe just something inherent in TB's?

I've only noticed it myself in the last year, and my suppliers and other
stores have noted it as well. Something is working its way through them.
Perhaps it's a good year to avoid purchasing them.

Mercury is not poisonous or toxic. Mercury Oxide is.
