View Full Version : Firemouth cichlids
I have a 55 gallon tank and want to stock it with some cichlids. The
firemouths are interesting to me. They seem to have a mild temperament
compared to some cichlids. How many should I start with? What other fish
could I keep with them?

How about 5 or 6 of them. You are not very restricted in tank-mates.
Just need to keep to sturdy fish their size plus/minus an inch or two,
Severums, Rainbows, Texans, Acaras etc and/or dither fish. I think 6
FMs, a couple of Synodontis, a neat pleco and 6 giant danios would work
nicely. Ask me tomorrow and my answer might be completely different
though ;~)

Don't forget the garbage men NetMax, besides the Pleco that is. I
really enjoy lots of Siamese Algae Eaters and Clown Loaches.

The SAE are a great addition if you have hair algae. I don't find that
they are that good otherwise, but everyone raves about them. Not sure
how Clown loaches would do in that mix. They are great fish but spend a
lot of time in the lower portion of the tank (as do Firemouths who will
be claiming caves), and I like to keep them in small herd, then there is
their eventual size. All interesting points to consider.
Another recipe might be 4 or 5 Anostomous, Leporinus or headstanders with
the FMs, and maybe 3 Geos. This will be tough on plants, but then so was
the previous recipe using the Severums.

I've kept my Firemouths with other cichlids such as as acie's, kribs, and
ausuerius(sp) and they did well. Never agressive and always in the open.
I've had them with large bala sharks, schools of various loaches, knifes,
tiger barbs, rainbows, even tetras..... I haven't found a fish yet that they
don't get along with, and due to their size, they're not picked on either.
