I have had my goldfish about 2 years now and i keep them in a 6 gallon tank.
I have just recently changed the gravel in the tank and the water still hasnt
cleared up, its still murky even thought i have a filter in tank and also
have an air stone in tank. I only did a 50/50 water change. Now my fish are
lying at the bottom of the tank & i dont know what to do? can any body help
me please?
Kind Regards

Oh no. Bad bad bad. Much of the beneficial bacteria was in the gravel.
Then the 50% water change.....good luck, you will need it.

Changeing your gravel killed the bacteria that break down fish waste
products, your tank must now go through another cycle to redevelop the
bacteria. There is not much you can do, small water changes may help
though, take water from the surface and do not disturb the gravel. In a
tank the size of yours I'd change about 2 gallons at a time. If you need
any more help you can e-mail me directly at , just
put goldfish in the subject matter.

EMERGENCY
1. check the water parameters: pH, ammonia, nitrite, nitrates
2. do the fish physical
3. change some or all of the water
4. from the water parameters and physical decide on a course of action
5. if there is nothing specific, do the tub to tub method
Check water parameters including ammonia, nitrites, nitrates, pH and temperature.
change water, remember to treat the chlorinated water first. the gravel contained
the biobugs. if you got the gravel, rinse it in treated water then put it back into
the tank.
QUIT FEEDING THE FISH until the water clears up and ammonia is gone.

If the gravel has been maintained in water, the answer to both is yes.
Otherwise......no the bacteria are dead.

Them? More than one in a 6g tank? Keep checking for AMMONIA and do partial
changes to keep it as low as possible. DO NOT disturb the gravel or filter
as the new bacteria are building numbers. Check for NITRITES and then do
the same. Your tank has to cycle all over again. Google
aquarium+nitrogen+cycle for more information that you ever dreamed of.
Your tank is kind of small for goldfish. GF get large fast if healthy and
well fed. Each needs at least 10g for proper growth and development.

do larger water changes. yes, add filter start if you got. biospira has been tested
by people on this list and is worth the money.

If all your water parameters are ok then you need to look elsewhere. I'm no
expert on GF diseases since I've had so little trouble with them over the
years. Parasites have been my bugaboo. :-( I can make suggestions but I
think it's better if you check out some websites like www.koivet.com run by
a veterinarian. You can start there - or Google goldfish+diseases or
goldfish+care. A GF on the bottom with it's dorsal fin down is not a good
sign.

you need to get a cycled filter and put it on the tank.
borrow one from some one
do not feed fish
keep up partial water changes

How much good brown slime is there in your filter?
MOST IMPORTANT THING!!!!
clean your filters in a bucket of water drawn from the aquarium.
NEVER UNDER A TAP!
you must keep your filter bacteria alive!!!
