View Full Version : Black Ghost Knife - Advice Please

Slats
May 9th 04, 02:26 PM
Hello all,

I am interested in purchasing a small (5cm) Black Ghost Knife fish for my 4
foot 320 litre tank. The tank is fully cycled and has a PH of 6.7, no
ammonia and nitrates.

The current fish in the tank are: 4 x Peppered Cory's (2cm), 2 x Silver/Bala
Sharks (5cm), 5 x Black Skirt Tetras (4cm), 1 x Common Pleco (10cm), 3 x
Adult Mollies (6cm). The tank is developing into a well planted tank.
Current plant density is around 30-40%.

Other than the fish above I am looking to add around 3-5 small clown loaches
in the near future. I am very intrigued with the Black Ghost Knife's
behaviour and am very keen to add one to my tank.

Will the Black Ghost Knife be compatible with my current fish? I do
understand it will grow pretty big, however I think my tank will cover it's
size. I have Drift wood and ornaments in which it can hide in.

I just want to make sure it will be fine as the last thing I would want to
do is make his life uncomfortable in my tank. Or make the life of my current
fish's uncomfortable due to the Knife's future size and eating habits (have
been told they eat tank mates at night).

I look forward to your replies :)

Regards,

If you subscribe to alt.aquaria, there was a good thread there started
there on April 30, titled black ghost knife.

I think it's a good fit. The Mollies don't quite fit (preferring hard
salty water) but they were there first ;~), and they will be a food
factory for your night feeding BGK.

I'm not sure how big BGK get and it does take years for CLs to reach
monster sizes too. Your Balas might be the fastest growing fish in
there. I'd say the time is ripe for a black ghost knife. Later it will
be much more difficult.

I bought my Black knife about 2 months ago, he was about 4" long. Today,
he's now over 8" long, grows fast. I've got some smaller zebra loaches, they
would fit in his mouth, but either they're to quick or doesn't bother with
them. We also keep him well fed as instructed to keep him from even looking
at other tankmates as food.

Other than that, he doesn't cause any problems in the tank, and the other
inhabitants ignore him. He gets a little grumpy if some fish enters his
"personal space" and quickly nudges them away. He gets in arguments with the
10+" albino choc pleco over the one log. Pleco usually gives the log up to
him after getting nudged for a 1/2 hour. He lets the clown loaches stay in
the log with him, doesn't chase them away.

You will love this fish. I killed two in the past due to a contamination
accident and a later fungus outbreak. But this was my all time favorite fish.
I am just about ready to introduce one again. This fish will keep you
captivated for hours as it glides soooo smoothly around the tank. I was able
to feed mine flake by hand. It ate primarily flake with a dose of worms in the
evenings. Mine were about 8" long. Such beautiful fish!

Is there any chance that you could add another log or some caves in
there? When fighting for shelter, loaches use their retractable spine
under their eye and Plecs use their spined pectorals in a sideways slash.
I don't recall the BGK having much in the way of scale protection, so
this might be a concern in a log, especially if it's big enough for the
plec to extend his fins. If the BGK is already sharing space with the
loaches, then he may have already learnt about their eye-spine. Maybe
they are all just good friends, but it's nice to let them decide if it's
possible.

IIRC, BGK, are scaleless, but use a mild electrical shock to stop their prey
or predators, stuns them so it can eat, or stuns them so it can flee....
I've had a mild dose of it...nothing bad, just a surprise... it radiates
from the nose, and is more of a tingle than a jolt... From what I
remember, they will only use that defense, if threatened, or if hunting....

A truly fascinating, nearly blind, fish... I have seen 12-15 in a tank
before... that's quite spectacular....

Hey!

I went around today and finally found one at the right price, here in
Australia some of the fish like loaches, plec's, elephant nose, black ghost
knife's are very expensive! :((( Maybe cos of the import costs of some crap.
It sucks :(((

Anyway got the little fella for $24 Australian Dollars (some shops wanted
$38, lucky I shopped around. I had to unfortunately not purchase from my
regular LFS as they could not meet the price of $24. ). He/She is about 2
inches.

I floated the little guy as per usually and then introduced him into the
tank. It was just hovering behind the heater until lights out. I had a quick
peak just now and it was in the plec's castle, hope plec does not mind when
he gets home from his normal night time excursions! hehe

Anyway I made a little cave for the Black Ghost Knife at the front of the
tank using clear materials and a tile slate. I released it in that area but
it swam straight for the other side of the tank! :( Whats the chances of it
finding the home I built for it? I hope no one else tanks up home there.

It;s not eating anything at the moment, I guess it has to get used to the
tank.

I;ve read a lot about hand feeding/taming the BGK, anybody have any tips on
how to achieve this?

Thanks for your help so far.

A very happy Slats! :)

Oh I just saw BGK come out and swim halfway across the tank, then he saw me
or sensed me and swam away right back towards the heater! Noooo wrong side
of the tank mate, the home I built you is on the other side!! :-S

Being next door to Singapore, Indonesia, China and Hong Kong, I have no
idea why Australia's tropical fish imports are so expensive. Are they
all quarantined in 5 star hotels for a month, or do you have huge import
tariffs or what? I sell them for about $20 and a 1/3 of my costs are air
freight over 2 oceans!

With the lights off, drop small pieces of thawed beefheart directly over
him. hmmm hmmm good :o) Lots of other foods work just as well. The
only challenge is to ensure that he gets at them, especially while new to
the tank.

Eventually, if it's safe to the BGK, it'll become home.. they aren't happy
with neighbors who are too nosy...

|| It;s not eating anything at the moment, I guess it has to get used
|| to the tank.

Mine took several days, but when I got mine, I didn't feed it the first
day... the second day, only fed the tank mates.. then on the third day, I
dropped in a bloodworm cube, and it hunted it down like prey.... soon after,
the pavlovian response took over... I used the bloodworm cube hitting the
lid as it's indicator, and it worked out well...

|| I;ve read a lot about hand feeding/taming the BGK, anybody have any
|| tips on how to achieve this?

Patience, and a good food that it likes...

I took a bloodworm cube, put it in my hand and lowered my hand down, very
slowly... it has to trust that you're not going to hurt it, and if it's ok,
then it'll sense the food and start looking... when it starts looking, you
have to trust that it won't bite you... it might but you'll feel a sensation
first... after the initial jerk, it isn't much, it'll back up, go forward,
back up, go forward a couple times until it realizes you aren't moving...
after the 4th or 5th time, it should explore your hand, or go back and
hide... don't force the issue or you'll become a pain to it, and it'll
ignore you... If you're a treat, it'll be more inclined to come back next
time.. and it will even look/wait for you when it's hungry....

BGKs are pretty cool... I'll try and find the article about their
electricity shortly...

Everything I've read says that they cannot shock but use their ability to
locate food. I have never seen mine act as if they have any sort of offensive
shock ability.

I'll post the link if I can find it.

In either case, this is a neat presentation about electrified fishes.

Yeah, There's lots of pretty good "big" hiding spots, but that one is the
fav of all the fish for some reason. The Parrot cichlids used to own the log
until they discovered they liked sleeping with their heads out of the water,
so now when they're not teasing other fish, they got their heads out of the
water. (After 5000 tests on the water months ago, discoved that it was the
lack of "traffic" in the upper regions on the tank that made it an ideal
resting spot for the parrots... plus they're assured first place when it
comes to feeding)

The BGK is getting a nice new home soon, setting up a 125g with lots of
nooks and cranny's.

I'm not looking forward to catching him to move him.

i just got a BGK 4 days ago and he acclimated himself to the tank very
quickly. ate the first night and was eating bloodworms out of my fingers
by the second night. guess i got lucky with that. i love this fish as it
is very quickly becoming my fav. and so far no trouble at all. i have 3
smallish white clouds and he has paid them no attention whats so ever.
his other tankmates are too big for him to eat. seems pretty peaceful to
me. at this point i would highly recommend this fish as they are very
enjoyable to watch and seem to have very distinct personalities.

Well well, another fine example of how favourably fish are priced in
South Africa. I see BGK in the shops from about R40 to R150 depending on
size and shop (thats from about 2 inches) Working on an exchange rate of
about R7 to the dollar(US) thats about $6 to $21 (US)

Pity that hardware is then so expensive!!!
