View Full Version : what is the crust on my glass?

Hi.

This is a rephrased version of an old post that didn't generate any
replies.

I have a 20 gallon that I recently set up to be a quarantine tank. I have
some river stones covering most of the bottom, but no gravel. These
riverstones were billed as "aquarium safe", and I have some of them in my
75 gallon, too. I have a powerfilter with ceramic rings (BIOMAX) from my
75 gallon filtering this tank. I have a second net filled with ceramic
rings sitting in the tank itself to use as backup filter media for either
of the aquaria, if needed.

I've noticed a layer of white crust or scale forming all over this
aquarium, on the heater, the glass, the river stones, and even on a plant
clipping I put in to use to seed the new aquarium.

Any ideas what this is? I'm really confused because my water supply is
the same for both aquaria, and I don't see this going on in my 75 gallon.

I have a few suspicions:

1) Maybe this is something leeching from the river stones? (probably
not, because these stones are in the 75g, too).

2) I put some aquari-sol in the 20 gallon a week or so ago to treat a
sick fish that eventually died. Is this some kind of residue from the
aquari-sol? (probably not, since I did a ~90% water change after the fish
died.)

3) Is this hard water "scale"? (probably not, because I'm not seeing the
same thing in the 75g, and I'm mixing my tap water, which is hard, with RO
water to soften it.)

4) Is this "dust" from the ceramic rings? This is my best guess at this
point, but I have no idea.

Any help appreciated!

shoot me down if it's a bit obvious, but did you wash them before you put
them in your filter? when they are packaged they do get knocked around a
fair bit but not enought to completely dust a 75g tank.

If not what flow rate do you have going though your filter, are the ring
'bouncing' around in your filter?

My 29 gallon tank has ceramic rings and it has no problem with white
crust other than that from minerals in the water supply. The crusting
I see is on the outside and is especially noticeable on my 10 gallon
tanks. I know that that crusting is from the water minerals as it is
worse where the the air bubbles splash the surface.

Only the 29 gallon has ceramic rings. The 10 gallon with the major
external crusting, on the frame, top of the heater, power filter box,
are caused by the long bubbler in this tank.

Is it forming inside or outside the tank. My crusts are all on the
outside.

Is the 75 gallon aereated? Does it have a tighter top?

The only one of my 5 tanks that has no crusting on the frame, etc. is
one 10 gallon that has no aereation. Thus I conclude the crusting is
from air bubbles carrying the minerals out of the tank and evaporating
leaving the crust. Very hard to keep clean. Vinegar works a little.

Ok, I've got the crusty things (laugh, I did) and I dont use RO water, but
I'm convinced it's lime, calcium, and salt....
