I have this bright red patch on two of my snails, never been there
before, I took pics. I took one of them out of tank for closer
inspection and these things are hard as rock, I looked soft and leach
like before I touched it, but it would not come off?
Any thoughts on the matter and should I be worried?

My assumption is that is a restriction imposed to take into account
bandwidth issues (not everyone is on ADSL), storage space on newsservers
etc. etc. and probably a few historical reasons as well - including the
fact that the groups aren't moderated and pictures could contain
offensive images....

Gill pretty much has it down, except for server issues about bandwidth. There
are groups out there that are dedicated to posting pictures. They usually have
something like "binary" in the name. ISCPs prefer to restrict photos to these
groups, due to the amount of space they take up. Then a service provider may
refuse to handle some or all of those groups to keep costs down.

The main reason (as Gill mentions) is because of the download times for dial-up
users, who still constitute about 60% of the private market, according to the
last figures I saw. Keeping photos segregated allows these users to not
subscribe to groups with photos.

My mother and siblings all have computers. Of the five of us, three have dial-up
service, I have DSL, and my sister mainly uses her line at work (probably a T3).
Dial-up is still the predominant service in the private market.

No.It's a storage and bandwidth issue for server admins mostly. Groups
that are not text only always have the word "binary" in their name.
These groups have messages that are much larger (byte wise) than the
text only groups. This naming convention allows news admins to avoid the
groups with huge messages if their server is on a slow link.
