Resun and other filters

I googled Resun filter, which was mentioned in the setting up a
canister filter thread. They're incredibly cheap in Australia, and the
pictures look good. One site that came up from the US belongs to a
poster on TFA: Carl! Here's the link:

Carl is only carrying the HOB model as far as I can see. Have folks run
into unusually-branded filters or other products? Attractively priced
ones? Do you have any comments? Tommy recently did a spreadsheet/
survey of some filters, but I forget the link.

The products I'm familiar with are Hagen, Eheim and Marineland. Rena is
still a new name for me. In the old days we had Dynaflow, Hartz
Mountain, "Miracle" UG filter and others...

They are cheap and they work. Their turnover is somewhat overrated, but if
you get way oversize you should be okay. I've only dealt with the canisters
and tank top wet/dry and powerheads tho.

Also in Australia, I just bought a canister filter branded "sun-sun". I got
it second-hand but unused. Its made in China and the instructions and
pachaging read as if they were written by a five year old. I noticed the
Reef-Shop is selling them online for $115. I've only had it for about a
month, but so far it works really well. It is 1400L/h and has a built in UV
sterilizer.

I have a similar Eheim cannister filter that has lasted over 15 years and is
still quiet - The only problem I ever had was when the cage around the inlet
filter broke and a bristlenose got sucked in and jammed it. However, the
Eheim costs a bit more.

Anyone know anything about this Sunsun thing?

It's a cheap piece of crap
In Australia I reccomend the otto brand for both powerheads and cannisters
(450G)
Waterfall filters are pay for what you get
the penguin 330 is still good value but most others suffer with narrow choke
points on the U intake pipe.
Jebo are nice but the valve O-ring perishes easily

The Resun I bought is now in it's box in the garage. It was fine until I
started cleaning th filter media in it and gradually all the plastic clips
on the lid all snapped off. Then the ceramic shaft in the impeller broke and
had to be replaced (not easy to get parts for I'm afraid) and then the hose
valves gradually went.

I replaced it with a 700L/H Aqua One type canister and it's not only quiet
and efficient (flow rate is NOT 700L/H btw - more like 200), but it is
nowhere near as fragile as the Resun was. I won't have Resun anything again
after the canister episode.
