View Full Version : Noisy MaxiJet 1200

Joe
January 14th 07, 03:31 AM
Question - I have a MaxiJet 1200 Powerhead in my tank to create some
current for my fish. I have it unplugged though because it is rather
noisy - it makes an almost grinding noise; I think its the impeller or
something, and I'm not sure how to fix/clean it? Anyone have any
suggestions?

Also, does anyone know whether a noise like that in the tank is bad for
the fish - it drives me nuts, so I'm assuming it drives them nuts too?
Any thoughts would be nice.

Finally, what's with the taunting messages on this listserv?

You need to take the pump apart and look for material in
the pump, and also look for warn parts. Also make sure you
don't get sand sucked into the pump, as that can wear it
out faster.

Well it certainly should not make ANY audible noise your going to hear
outside the tank........There may be something in and around the
impeller / magnet making noise. Easy enough to pull apart and check.
Just make sure the impeller cavity is cleanand free od debri and also
the impeller / magnet assembly, and that the rubber bushings on the
ends of the impeller shaft are in place...and not crushed or busted.
There shuld be a rubber bushing on each end of the stainless steel
shaft.

I had a Aqua Clear filter I bought for my 10 gallon freshwater. When I
plugged it in the first time every few minutes it made a grinding noise. I
took the pump apart and did everything I knew to fix it. Still made the
noise. Finally took it back. I just assumed it was a defective motor and
couldn't be fixed??

Aqua Cloear hob filters have a bad problem of being noisey right out
of the box anymore. Usually when a pump of an y kind makes a noise
especialy a AC its due to noise and a leaking air inlet water tube
etc. But it seems in their haste to put out filters and pumps they are
skipping a step and that is cleaning off the mold flash from the
injection moded parts.

Aqua Clears are pretty much my stable of most use items as they are
work horses and easy to work on and filter media of all kinds can be
used so they are very versitle and cheao. Now what I do is pull
impeller and clean it up good from any flash, and make sure it is aboe
to rotate back and forth when the impeller is intsalled nthe shaft
with relative ease. If its sticky it will also make noise until it
wears some and gets looser. I also add a drop of silicone to the
impeller to shaft at the clutch mech, and allow it to setup for a day
before using. All it takes is a drop. This cushions any noise like
grinding you hear and by the itme the silicone comes off the impeller
to shaft is all seated in and quiet. Beats having togo without a
filter or hearing that noise. Hagen (Aqua Clear) is about as usefull
as screen doors on a subnarine when it comes to customer satisfaction.
Try and get em to honor even a 25 cent item without having to return
that item and proofs of purchase etc and still jump through hoops.
Their canned reply is take it back to where yu got it for another or a
refund. That is all fine and well but if you mail ordered it that can
add up a bunch of $$ easy as wellas time. So just clean up that
impeller of excessive flash and make sure it is free to rotate and
move back and forth on that shaft it snaps onto on the magnet and if
necessary add a dot of silicone......it works.

The intermittent noise you mention sure sounds like air getting sucked
in or that impeller is sticking from moolding flash.

Thanks everyone for the advice. I'll keep all this in mind next time I have
a noisy filter/powerhead.

You have to h and Roy Tristan some credit. He does have a very large and
bold imagination or perhaps its a lot of help from all those voices
that he is hearing all the time in his inebriated head......

Take it apart. The little propeller thing pulls out and has a magnet on the
end. If dirt gets in there, it can make a nasty noise. Use a thin little
bottle brush to clean it out. Do not use soap, etc. I know, that is obvious,
but you never know...so don't be insulted. I had a friend who put a soapy
sponge in her freshwater tank to clean the glass. Duh. She cried when the fish
died.

I bet it does.

You're exactly right. Mine developed a bad noise, and all it took
was a good cleaning with a brush to fix it. That goes for noisy
powerheads too.

Make sure you use the brush between the impellar teeth too.
