View Full Version : snail explosion - help

Hi all,
I think they came in on weed, but I have maybe 50 tiny snails in my tank.
They are not the regular types I've had before to keep the glass clean, and
I read a while ago that some snails carry brain fluke. I lost two fish to
this, and I religiously removed every snail I saw. That was about 2 months
ago - and I also removed all the weed, and have not bought weed from the
same shop .
How can I kill the snails without hurting my fish? I have 2 platies, one
swordtail, one goodsized SAE and 10 halfgrown balloon mollies in an 80 litre
tank.
TIA

I had a fish with eye fluke, which I was told presumably came
from a snail. It was easily treated however.

I would get a loach or three. I have a yoyo loach, and no more snails,
in a 70 litre tank. The only time I notice snails is when the shells
float to the surfact and need removing.
Another way is to get a clean glass jar and put it on the tank floor
(lying down) containing algae wafers etc - then you have a jarful
of snails ready for removal. In practice this only works to a limited
extent - better than nothing, but they can probably breed quicker
than you can remove them!
I also remove the snail egg goo (blobs around the water level) on
a regular basis.
Can't recommend a chemical alternative as I haven't tried one.

you don't mention the tank size but if it is of any size at all I would pick
up a Yo Yo loach as the other poster mentioned or 3 or 4 clown loaches (they
should be kept as a group). I have 5 in a 77g planted tank and this morning
I gave them snails that I had removed from some of my other 35 tanks. If you
can see 50 then you probably have 500 that you don't see. I keep mine under
control in the non loach tanks by using the plastic up lift tube from an ATI
filter. Put a piece of zucchini or cucumber inside the tube and within an
hour the tube will be full of snails. Remove the tube, dump the snails and
throw the tube back in. Works like a charm.

Hmmmm. Don't know any chemical means, but my first thought would be 2 -3
Zebra Loaches or Kuhli Loaches. Problem is, your tank (80 liters, or 21
gallons for those of us on the west side of the pond) already strikes be as a
bit crowded. OTOH, all those snails are eventually going to do a number on
your bioload, too.

Now that this thread has come up again, it allows me to ask my twist on
the question:
I know that loaches are usually recommended for this duty, but are any of
the loaches compatible with pygmy, delicate fish?
My 75g planted community tank has threadfin rainbows, pygmy corys, otos,
honey gouramis, and ember tetras (among others), which are all small (some
<1", a few 1-2"). Most of these fish are supposed to be kept only with
other small, non-aggressive fish. I'd like to get rid of some of the pond
snails in my tank (I have one big snail that came in on a big fern, but
most of my snails are small pond snails), but I'm worried that any
snail-eater would also be too rough for the rest of my community.
Any thoughts? I like the idea of removing them by baiting a plastic
tube, and I might try that.

Kuhlis are pretty unaggressive...bordering on the absurdly shy. Small mouths,
'tho, so I don't think they'd do much to an adult snail (even an adult pond
snail). Decent job cleaning out the zillions of babies that snails produce,
'tho.

Chris - I have a 10 gallon w/ three skunk botia
(full grown), 3 otos, 4 young C. habrosus (1/2" -
3/4" in length).
In a 20 gallon long I have two rambunctuous
YoYo loaches, 3 otos, 3 Neon tetras, three
young adult C. paleatus (about 1-1/4" in length).
So far, no problems.
It may be that skunk botia & yoyo loaches aren't
especially aggressive toward other fish, but in any
case I have observed no interspecies aggression.

I don't think the tank is crowded, as the water parameters are very stable.
If you think of inches of fish, it would be 11 inches max - the balloons are
very small, the only fish of any size is the SAE - the first one that I've
seen gobbling up the flake food. Maybe I've calculated the size
incorrectly - maths is not my strong suit:-)
I'll try to get a couple of loaches, as I have another smaller tank that I
could more some mollies into if it gets crowded as they grow up.THe snails
are all tiny too - so should I get a smaller type loach so we don't get
crowding?
Thanks for the help everyone.
