hey,
ive been letting my tank sit and settle with new water and filtration for
about 2 weeks now. i would like to put big rocks in, but not the ones you
buy from a store.. just natural rocks.. whether its slate or weathered
stream rocks..whats everyones opinon on doing this... and what should i do
before putting these in my tank..
by the way im making this a cichlid tank, and ive read rocks are excellent
for cichlids.
let me kno!

This is fine. Many people do it. Just make sure you clean the rocks well.
Boiling is prob. a good idea. Also with cichlids there could be some chasing
between the fish. So sharp rocks should be avoided.

Unless your a geologist try and avoid rocks that have veins running through
them. If they are quartz veins they will be inert, however, calcium veins
will increase the hardness as the calcium very slowly dissolves. However, if
you have a South African Cichlid tank which requires harder water (higher
pH) then this could be a benefit.

If the veins are reddish then they have iron in them and also prone to
dissolve slowly. Just take care that's all.

Nice big rounded granite pebbles would be nice or even slate.
