Not all gel cell bats have half the life of a lead acid. There are
many ytpes. There is a gel cell lead acid, which gives good longevity,
there is also gell cells for deep cycle batteries, and while they may
not be available to just anyone anay more and they are more hassle to
charge and maintain the ones that I wuld jump on are the high capacity
individual cell NiCads, which are built up to voltage requred by
adding individual cells of 1.35 vdc. I have one of them in my diesel
powered tractor now for over 15 years, my kids have had one I built
up ina boat topopwer a trolling motor on the pond and has gotten a
full weekend of playing with a troling motor powered boat, and its
still got lots of juice left in it. I use one for powering my bandsaw
blade welder and I can weld a total of 2 dozen or more joints of 1/2
to 1" widths before sucking it down that it needs to be recharged for
more weldoing but is still powerfull enough to crank a vehicle with.
Lead acid batteries wiould give 6 to 8 such welds and fail to crank a
vehicle in the end. I give a buck each ofr new surplus cells from
American Surplus and scientific, and only wished I bought more at the
time.
A really good battery is the Gell cell yellow top Optima batteries,
but the red top Optima is not a slouch by any means either. Yellow top
is deep cycle, where the other is not.....Kind of pricey though, but
they seem to last forever even when not maintaianed with trickle
charge.
