View Full Version : High Nutrient Tank

I've been slowly cleaning out every part of my tank and I'm somewhere
between amazed and appalled.
In my surface skimmer, I found an over flow that goes to the sump and an
underflow that goes into a collection area. Obviously, it worked
because there was all sorts of crud in there. I decided to remove it
and just let the crud fall back to the sand layer for the hermits to
feast on.
I cleaned all the debris off the power heads and took them apart. They
appeared to have some grease in them, but I think that's normal.
I'm trying to find something to clean out the long stand pipe. I
suppose I'll just use a rag and dowel.
The hose seems like an obvious offender. I hear I should replace it
once a year any ways to avoid "leak events", but I'll add that to my
monthly maintenance cycle.

Check out the stuff at a wild bird seed store. Sometimes they have brushes the
right size with small handles. You're looking for one with a small handle with a
loop or hole in it for a cord. The idea is that you drop the cord through your
pipe and pull the brush through.

It's the flexible hose that runs from the overflow stand pipe to the
sump. I cleaned it out tonight with a bottle brush and hot water.
Now for the stand pipe. I may need a run to the hardware store for
supplies to clean that one.
My tank looks much better. Most of the red slim has gone away, but
there are still a few spots that look bad.

Red Slime is a dead giveaway someone was using that tank for deviant
purposes.....My stand pipe stands up pretty darn good......hows yours
doing Wayne?
Care to expound on that Wayne?

You don't need to change that hose that often. If
you see deterioration on it, then change it,
otherwise if it is soft and flexible, and no sign of
deterioration, or hardness, then it's fine. You can
get 5 years out of them. Though I suppose there
could be some brands that don't last as long as others.

The hose seemed flexible and in good condition, so no plans to replace.
I think I'll just do a monthly maintenance routine and clean out
everything. I'll replace it as soon as I notice and rigidity or wear.

heh as an ex-soldier I use different barrel cleaners...
or just a fishing sinker attached to fishing line attached to a thin strip
of rag.
If ya know the plastic can handle it, metho and hot water is great cleaner.

My barrel cleaners of any size are brass brushes. Sort of hard on tubing. I
might be able to find a soft swab for a shotgun, though. Good idea there.

see with my beautiful chromed barrels
brass was always a bit harsh
maybe a pull or 2 ta loosen the carbon but after that
nothing but forby! (slang for the cleaning cloth)
a shotty one would work well tho.
when ya give up ya guns ya gotta find some use for all the accessorys
I carry my camera with an old urban 3 point sling
not often but sometimes someone does a double take on it
quick grin and wink
heh heh
working with fish is a lot easier I tells ya
they don't yell back
