View Full Version : A non fish problem... :)

This group is very full of Fish problems (not a bad thing) so I thought I'd
add a different spin...

While reading these threads, if I see any new names of fish, I go and check
them out on various sites... When I first looked up mollies, I thought they
were fairly average looking... But when I noticed them at my LFS and pointed
to them, they all chased me about the front of the tank! Fell in love with
them straight away... So, now I have (only) three mollies which joined my
lone Guppy boy and silver shark, I also added two chicky babe guppies for my
boy... (who seems chuffed!)

The kids love the mollies and guppies and they mollies seem to have real
personalities... I feel I need to name them!

Anyways, thought I just might share my new found friends with you all....

Thanks for reading...

It seems you might have a problem there. Mollies are the fish that got me
hooked on aquaria.

I started out with a 10 gallon tank. Then I got a 29 gallon so I would have
more room for the babies. I really loved fish-keeping, and it slowly took
over my life. Two years later I was up to 17 tanks, two ponds, and over
3,000 fish. I was even planning to buy more. Luckily, I was able to kick the
habit...sort of ....

I got a new job, a new girlfriend, and didn't want to spend half my free
time taking cleaning aquariums. I sold all my fish, and all the tanks with
them. Whew ! I was free ! Kicked the habit !

For a month, anyway...

I missed the fish, and talked my girlfriend into buying a 40 gallon tank.
Gradually the addiction started taking over, and I bought some more more
tanks. I was up to 1,000 fish again when my girlfriend gave me an
ultimatum - either the fish had to go or she would.

The fish shure do miss her. ;-)

p.s. Don't worry, I'm down to 3 tanks and 200 fish, now that I moved and
have a river in my back yard. Hmmmm.... a river full of mollies ??? Nah

I have named fish that were special in some way. Usually larger fish
where I have fewer of them. My cloud of "White Clouds" are too much
alike to ever name. If you can tell them apart and can think of names
I would do it. Part of the personality is getting to know their
special behaviors. I have one Clown Loach that I should name. He was
a runt and almost died in a community tank. I moved him to a
quarantine tank where he started eating and became much more active.
I have felt much closer to him than the larger Clowns that I keep in
all my tanks. A month ago I moved him to a 10 gallon tank that was
loaded with snails. He disappeared. I finally located him in a
tunnel he dug under some rocks. I put him back into the Q tank. Why
have a fish you can't see. But, the snail problem got worse and I
didn't have another Clown that I thought would be comfortable without
company so back he went and re dug his cave. I compromised. I made
his cave larger and position so I could see him when in it, but fairly
small so he would feel safe. It worked. He doesn't stay in the cave
all the time, but does use it throughout the day. I really care for
this one fish.

One problem with mollies and guppies, they don't know when enough is
enough! They both breed a lot. I had one molly that dropped 50 fry
in one night. She was in my Q tank so the fry lived. As they grew I
gave some away, but had to spread the rest around. I still have 6 in
the Q tank. Be careful what you wish for you might get it. Be
thinking about what to do with all the babies you can expect to get.
Mollies are one of my favorite fish, but enough becomes too much
quickly.

If you have kids, you might want to use the dual approach and cover
both math and the alphabet, Molly 1, Molly A, Molly 2, Molly B, etc.
