View Full Version : Another good Betta article in TFH magazine

March 3rd 07, 04:43 AM
There's another good article in Tropical Fish Hobbyist magazine about
Bettas and how badly treated they are. People keeping them in tiny,
unheated bowls. This is the second piece in a matter of months doing
so too.
Maybe folks will finally get a clue, stop mistreating them, and
actually care for them properly.
It'll take time to educate all the folks out there who don't. They all
seem to think that just because it survives in a small, cold bowl it's
perfectly fine. Well, it isn't. It's a fact that these fish need to be
in warm water (78-80*f) in order to thrive. It's a fact that they,
just like any other fish thrive in a filtered tank.
It's also a fact that these fish need room to swim. They don't prefer
tiny bowls or vases.
So many people think that male Bettas can't be in with other community
fish. Again, not so.
As long as they are the correct tank mates and aren't in with fin
nippers they do well.
While recently at a pet shop I was looking at the shipment of female
Bettas they had and a girl came up to me. She said "Don't buy a
female "bait-uh" (Duh..she can't even pronounce the name properly),
they'll suffocate." I have no clue where she got that one.
It's amazing at all the myths out there. These poor fish need a break
and some knowledgeable people buying them.

I wanted to add the section where the article talks about tank size.
Sub-titled *Bigger is Better*.
It says that "recent scientific findings sugest that that the long
tern health of Bettas housed in tiny enclosures is compromised, with
the life span of closely confined speciemns being drastically shorter
than those animals that have plenty of room to swim about. Autopsied
specimens that were kept in small enclosures have been found to have
died from atrophied muscles and fatty degeneration of tissues, while
their counterparts maintain a high degree of muscle tissue and
experience much longer life spans. Specimens confined to tiny bowls
seldom exceed 18 months to 2 years in captivity, while free-ranging
specimens housed in larger aquaria may thrive for more than seven or
eight years!"
The article in the April -07 Issue of Tropical Fish Hobbyist magazine
is written by Philip A. Purser.
He also goes on to talk about the need for filtration and how the lack
of can lead to poor water conditions quickly and a Bettas fins can
quickly break down from it.
I urge anyone with a Betta or that knows somebody with one that houses
it in a tiny, unheated, and unfiltered bowl/vase to read this
article.
I've been saying all of this stuff for many years and once again,
there's been a printed article saying the same.
Sometimes people need to read printed material to believe it.

Yea I used to try tell people all that too
but the reality is they don't wanna hear it
betta keepers in 90% of cases consider the fish an ornament
good on ya for continueing with the good fight
but tis an unwinnable battle
On the bright side, it means Thai fish farms
can keep operating at 100% capacity
some pump out millions each week!!!!

Personally all my betta are in community tanks
livebearer population control

Many people buy them for their children as they're cheap, small, pretty and
the small bowls sold to them are also cheap. In no time the betta is dead. I
stopped raising them in the 1960s when I realized this. It's cruel to raise
them just to sell them into certain suffering an death at the hands of
people who know no better.

This is believe is true. How many people read these Newsgroups? The pet
shops don't tell people the fish need something more than a 8 oz. ivy bowl
to live in.

Well.....this is how someone houses their bettas.......not sure it

I used to do pretty much the same hey
now tho I put paradise fish in bowls like that
the fighters don't handle the temp jumps so well in this area
so paradise fish in bowls and fighters in tanks
for me anyway.

Have sold hundreds of fighters in my time
bred quite a few batches myself too
and at the end of the day
people really just want something pretty
and 'easy'
easy = will live for a few months
treated badly and only cost $10

to make money ya gotta give people what they want,
I always tried to push the paradise fish
and a larger container
but sometimes
people don't wanna hear a 30 min lecture
and ya gotta pay the rent.

:)
But yea spread the word
those that care enuf to actually look
will learn.
But 99% of betta keepers
will never think to look or ask
no matter how many they kill
Betta will always be 'easy'
in their mind.

Humans ROCK!

Yes, and these bettas lived for 5 years with weekly water changes and a
large variety of foods.

They're in gallon tanks now. Are you going to complain they're also too
small?

I think you need to stop being a hypocrite and practice what you preached to
me on the phone and by e-mail for weeks last year. What's good for the
geese isn't good for the ganders in the UK?

I wonder if they'll come down on you for admitting that. :-O After all,
some will see that as cruel as keeping bettas that way no matter how good
the care you give them

Those who keep them in in gallon bowls or less and give them excellent care
and feeding can have them around for 4 to 5 years.

Damn right! And most are not going to spend $60 or more to house a $3.99
betta.

Just like goldfish. They wont spend a lot of money on something they don't
value much and is cheap to replace. Some people can't afford a tank,
filter, heater, dechlor, food etc for one small fish.

Then they shouldn't get a fish!
Duh!
Same with any other animal. If you can't afford to properly care for
it, you shouldn't have it. No matter what it cost you to purchase.
You need to go read the article piece I posted from TFH magazine
where it talks about the effects to the fish's body when kept in
little bowls. It DOES harm them.
Scientific proof probably won't be enough for you to stop saying such
nonsense anyway.
You always want to argue about it, so dance away puppet........

Duh!

Double Duh!! Then the salesperson would lose their job for refusing to sell
the customer what they want - duh!

Same with any other animal. If you can't afford to properly care for
it, you shouldn't have it. No matter what it cost you to purchase.

Tell that to the owners and stockholders of the chain Pet Stores. I doubt
they're lurking here.

You need to go read the article piece I posted from TFH magazine
where it talks about the effects to the fish's body when kept in
little bowls. It DOES harm them.

Then demand these articles be printed out and handed out in the pet stores.
Or get laws passed that people must either purchase tanks, heaters and
filters with each betta or show proof they already own the equipment needed.

Scientific proof probably won't be enough for you to stop saying such
nonsense anyway.

Nonsense? How are you going to convince sales people to refuse selling
bettas and lose their jobs?

You always want to argue about it, so dance away puppet........

Double duh? lol

There are shops who refuse to sell fish to customers.
I hear several Petsmarts are doing it. The one by my son's house
refused to sell them neons because the tank they had didn't have a
heater. His Girlfirend wanted them and was ticked because they
wouldn't sell them to her. I said WOW! They're actually doing the
right thing. I explained to her that I understood she didn't like
being told by a shop employee she couldn't buy what she wanted, but
they did the right thing, as those fish need a heated tank. She
understood.
There's another Petsmart in my Mom's town that has 2 employees who
refuse to sell fish to people without the proper set up.
Another AOL member I know works at a Petsmart in (I forget of it's TX
or Alabama) that refuses customers as well.
They are changing.
It may be slow, but it is catching on.

Hauer and his attacks on me?

what

I have. Try and remember all the things you said. I have not repeated

Check again. RAMR is thriving. They were smart enough to killfile him and go

Thanks Gill.
She does know how to dance, doesn't she. lol
I do like the muppet reference. A lot less intelligence involved.
She keeps on dancing like a muppet / puppet by replying to everyone's
posts. Proving over, and over how much of a muppet she really is.
She can't come up with anything good on her own, takes what I said,
tried to use it against me, but is actually proving me right about how
much of a dancing puppet she really is. So predictable. So typical.
Nothing new. Same old Carol respsonses.
Such a bore. No doubt she'll post over and over so she can have the
last word. Again, typical Carol. Then she'll post a reply in one of
her many other screen names pretending to be somebody else and
clogging up the groups. Such a snore fest.
Looking down at the later posts...yeah. She does the muppet-puppet
dance over and over, yet doesn't have a clue as to how much of a joke
she really is. Dance away...muppet. Dance.
Every response you make proves it once again.
Gills said it right on before. When you stop...it all stops. But you
can't do it can you? Just keep on dancing for us.

Hey Carol....in case you didn't realize this, but this thread was
about Bettas, not YOU!
Stop trying to make every single post about YOU.
Did you even bother reading the information about what happens to
Bettas when kept in bowls, the size that you kept yours in for many
years? It doesn't matter that they lived in those cramped quarters for
4 yrs. You keep going on like that was a good thing.
It means they suffered that much longer. Just think if they were in a
3g, or a 5g, or 10g how long they may have lived.
It's now a fact that when kept in small bowls, like you had yours in
on your kitchen window sill, it does damage to their muscles, and ends
their lives sooner.
You'll say they thrived because they lived 4 yrs like that. Sorry.
Surviving and thriving are very different things. Until you have a
necropsy done by a certified vet, you cannot claim keeping them in
tiny bowls didn't harm them. It's been proven otherwise.
If you reply, and of course you will, as you always reply to
everything, make it about Bettas!
It's not the Dancing Muppet-puppet Carol show.

Would you have considered it a good thing if they had died as probably 98%
of all bettas do in weeks of leaving the breeder?

How much longer? A month? Two months. Why harass me constantly over this?
What are you getting out of it? Why not go out there and stop the breeding
and sale of bettas when you know most will end up in small containers,
neglected and soon be dead?

How much sooner? These lived 5 years and one old one hung on longer than
that. Why don't you start a movement to stop the sale of bettas? Hounding
me endlessly isn't going to make one iota of difference for the millions
sold each year worldwide.

> You'll say they thrived because they lived 4 yrs like that. Sorry.

Sorry is right.... the did thrive. They were beautiful, grew old and finally
died after 5 years.

And you can't claim it did without necropsies. Do you expect me to revive
the dead, take out loans and spend $60 on each betta who has passed away?
What is you point going on and on and on about this? They're GONE! They
grew old and they died. Why don't you start a movement to stop the breeding
and selling of these fish because people will continue to keep them in small
containers.

It's been proven otherwise.

Why do you reply to everything? Why is it ok for YOU to reply to everything
but not someone else? What makes you different?
