Anyone know any reasons why silver dollars and discus can't go in the same
tank? 640L tank.
Cheers

Discus, slow moving.
Silver dollars, never stop moving.
Discus prefer quiet neighbours smaller than themselves.
Silver dollars get large and prefer the company of a fast moving crowd.
Discus do well in planted tanks.
Silver dollars enjoy eating planted tanks ;~)
It's not an impossible mix though, especially in a 170g tank. Realize
that it will significantly reduce the amount of fish you can have (by a
factor of 4 or 5), as the SDs will need room to roam and the Discus will
need their space for puttering. You could break up the tank into 3 or 4
zones with different amounts of aquascaping. The SDs will prefer the
more open areas with low ground cover, so give them space to go back &
forth, or swim a circle around an island of plants/rocks. The Discus
will need sufficient room to be unmolested. Stock them all as juveniles,
and then start learning what plants the SDs will not eat. I'd also stock
a small ditherfish. They will contrast/school with the SDs and not
challenge the Discus. The dither will also make the SDs more secure,
otherwise they will be crashing into the Discus territory to hide. You
will need to fine tune as you go along. Possible dither is the Giant
danio.
