View Full Version : Yellow Tang w/ Red marks

My Yellow Tang recently has red marks on it's body towards its tail.
The obvious answer is that it has Ich or similar and has been rubbing
itself raw. However, it doesn't seem to really be itching itself or
doing anything odd, and I've been watching it for a few hours.
Is it just raw? Any comments? Ideas?

Red marks are sometimes a sign of bacterial infection. There's also the
possibility that some other fish is harassing the Tang. Tangs have little
daggers buried in the base of the tail and defend themselves with them; they're
sometimes called "surgeonfish" for this reason. Is it possible that your Tang is
swatting at another fish and hitting something else?

If you torture the data long enough, eventually it will confess
to anything.

Thats what you get for buying crappy fish from Wayne or from his
suggested places of purchase. UntilWayne, CarolGulley and Pzsemol
gets done molesting the fish they are highly stressed.

Yeah, he's been going after a blue fin damsel that probably richly
deserves it.
I'll wait and see.

Do a large water change. There could be problems in
the water causing this. Check ammonia, nitrite, and
nitrate.

I'm swearing off water changes as a cure. I'll do a 20% once a month
(did it last week) and just deal with what comes up.

My Yellow Tang developed this when a) I first introduced it (it also
picked up a dose of Ich) and b) after I stressed it out after adding
more live rock while it was in the tank (it was impossible to catch).
On both occasions the red slowly faded over the next 2 - 3 weeks and
the Tang showed no ill effects. Change the water if you really want
but I don't think it necessary - it's almost like a bruise that just
fades away.
This subject is also mentioned on the WetWebMedia website and on Reef
Central - a forum 100 times better than this one.
