Apple snails would eat most algae. Pomacea bridgesii apple snails would
not eat your java moss,Pomacea canaliculata will eat all aquarium plants.
LFS most of the time sell Pomacea bridgesii. There are other kinds but I
am not sure of them.

I received four mystery snails as a bonus with a mixed variety plant
package. (I buy everything over the internet) I already had Clown
Loaches in all but my 10 gallon tanks. All went well for awhile, but
one day I noticed a plant was missing a chunk. I had several
suspects, but finally moved the mystery snail to my 75 gallon tank.
One day I actually saw the snail taking bites out of an anubia. At
the time I was still fighting black hair algae in the tank and some
was growing in the gravel. I put the snail on one of the patches and
covered it with a clear plastic dish. He did eat the algae. I moved
the dish the next night and the same results. So, it would eat algae,
but it was also a plant eater. The experiment ended with the end of
the mystery snail. My Clown Loaches had a fine meal.
I can't say about java fern. I have some, but the episode lasted only
a few days.

You missed the punch line, the Clown Loach had a fine meal. The snail
was fine I had left him free to roam. I was surprised only one of the
four Mystery snails ate plants. The other three never did eat plants.
Eventually all of them were eaten by the Clowns. I was sorry about
that as I found them very attractive additions to my tanks.
