We've got a six month old tank - 6 mollies (4 of which are 6 month old), 6
guppies and 3 clown loach...

All seems fine but after puttnig the loach in we lost a guppy and baby molly
within a day or two - never seen again - coincidence?

Also, the tank is 'natural'. Sand at the bottom, few live plants but they
get covered in a black sludgy algae which does wash off. Any ideas how to
get rid of the gunky stuff???

In order to do anything besides guess, I could use some more info on
your setup.

1:Size of tank?
2:What type of filtration?
3:Maintenance regimen?
4:What are the water parameters? Nitrites, Nitrates, temp, ammonia
etc...
5:What kind of Lighting? Many plants are very demanding light-wise
and can do some disgusting things when they start giving up.

One guess i will make, is that perhaps your tank did not have
sufficient biological filtration to handle the additional
inhabitants. I'd be willing to bet a couple Cabomba that your
ammonia, and perhaps nitrite are now high, and these poisons took
your weaker fish.

pls post back.
