My tap water is pretty hard, and I have to treat it with peat moss to reduce
the hardness so my plants will grow well. I'm not going to buy an R/O system
just for plants ...

I was thinking about putting peat moss in the media chamber of a power
filter, instead of soaking the peat moss overnight and using just the water.

Good idea or not ? Any other ideas / comments ?

I think you might find it will compact to much & block the thing - I did
some experiments a while ago with an eheim cannister. If you want to put
peat in the filter then you'd need to use peat granules that you can buy at
the LFS....much harder and shouldn't compact into a solid lump.

Another option would be just to hide a bag of peat in the tank as long as
you don't mind water the colour of tea!

Fine, except it will darken the water and the plants won't get enough
light. Have you tested water that sat overnight with peat? Does it
actually soften the water that quickly?

How hard is your water?

My tap water = pH 7.8 , after soaking peat moss in it overnight the pH is
down to 7.1 , not perfect, but much better than 7.8.
