View Full Version : My crayfish escaped!

My crayfish that I have had for about 4 months must have escaped! I
found it on the floor on its back about 5 feet from the tank :-(. I
put it in a bucket of water to see if might possibly have some life in
it. I am waiting to see if perhaps it might resurrect itself. (Highly
doubt it.) Has this happened to anyone and has anyone rejuvenated
their crayfish? I know that some eels and other fish can be
rejuventated when they get out.

happens to me every time I provide some sort of ladder for my crayfish to
get out. they just climb up and out like lemmings and die because they are
all dried up. I have no idea why they do this.

Really? The crawfish in my backyard don't seem to have much of a problem
being out of the water for a few hours after a heavy storm stirs them to
activity, but then again I suppose the grass they are wandering across
isn't all that dry. And when it does get dry they dig holes and
hibernate deep in the ground for however long it is until the next monster
storm.

Crayfish are naturaly curious & are great escape artists even with closed
lids & no way to escape. It is one thing for crays to leave the water when
coming out of a pond because they can get back in. When they leave a fish
tank they can't get back in so will only survive until they dry up. They can
only survive/breath while their gills are weta few hours at most depending
on humidity.
Anytime you keep crayfish may sure you have a lid & all escape routes are
covered. eg ( holes for filters & heaters no matter how small.) If the lid
is not REALLY secure fix it. They can open lids. I have seen it with my own
eyes.

Yup Mine croaked too! Well not Croak, frogs do that. Dried out and died.
Sorry, my condolences, it is in a better place now,

I've had crayfish escape on me too, but my best one was a fish who
"escaped".
I had a 14 inch common pleco jump onto the floor, where I found it dried out
on my way to work. I was running late and figured he was beyond hope, so I
rushed off to work and planned to clean it up when I got home.
Curiosity got the better of me when I got back 9 hours later, and I threw
the "corpse" back in the tank to see if anything would eat it. Dumb idea,
but I was curious ...
Half an hour later, the pleco was swimming around !
He/she had severe fin damage, and was fighting several infections for
awhile, but eventually it made a complete recovery ! After at least 10
hours out of the water !
Sometimes they surprise you ....
