HI
How much hiding space do I need to provide in my 120G. The pleco, raphael
catfish and loaches only come out at night to play.

The Raphael are like that, Plecos can be like that and loaches vary by
type and individuality (and whether there are predators during the day).
Supply enough shelter so they don't all squeeze together. The Ralphs &
Plecs pectorals can be murder on a scaleless loach.

My tank bottoms are carpeted with a variety of plants. There are
times when my Clown Loaches disappear. I have looked closely, but
they get in the plants and I just can't see them. However they do
come out when I put food in, so I can verify they are alive and well.
In the same 75 gallon tank I have 3 marbled Plecos. They are much
more active in the day time than the 6 clowns.
Hiding space is a problem, isn't it. After all we set the tanks up to
see the fish, but we want the fish to be comfortable. I have one runt
Clown Loach that a long time ago I moved from a 10 gallon in my
bedroom to a quarantine tank because he was not eating and didn't look
well. He has done well in the Q tank and would come to the surface to
take food and swam around the tank all day. I have a castle ornament
that he would retire to sometimes, but not often. I put him back in
the bedroom to attack the small snails that had sprouted up and he
disappeared. He dug a cave and stayed in all day and since he had no
need for my food, I never saw him. I could watch the diminished snail
population, but I want to see the Clown. I may move him back to the Q
tank so I can see him. He is happy apparently in either setting.
Your question is a good one. I sure would provide shelter and
personally like the live plant solution. I can enjoy the plants even
if the fish are not visible.

I knew I could count on you guys for an intelligent answer. [Really, I am
not kidding] At least I know mine are not any weirder than the rest.
Thanks Again
