View Full Version : Fish to get on with my peacocks?

Flash Wilson
June 15th 04, 08:19 AM
Hi,

In my 200 litre community tank, I am down to the following fish.

- two peacock cichlids, who rule the roost
- three catfish (2 plecos, one clown syno)
- four clown loaches of various sizes
- two tiger barbs (elderly)
- one leopard danio
- one red-tail black shark (small but now growing after moving
to my tank from a small one he was in for years - he's only 1")

The striped fish (peacocks, clown loachs, tiger barbs) all get
along and the loaches chill out in the caves, the peacocks
among the rocks. No bother there. The catfish have their own
corner where they lurk by day behind bogwood. The little shark
is doing his own thing, seems to like nibbling my plants, and
isn't bothered by anyone. And the danio, who recently lost his
last friend, is probably going to get eaten soon :/

Other stuff? pH 7.6 approximately, medium hard. Filtration from
a Fluval 204 and a Fluval 3 internal (either can cope on their
own for a day when the other is out, I have discovered) and
when the tank was more heavily stocked they coped well. So I
am less worried about measuring inches of fish exactly and more
worried about territory. They get fed flake, frozen bloodworm,
catfish pellets and cucumber, so something for everyone. There
are several live plants, bogwood, rocks, caves etc.

The main thing is my two peacocks (sold as a pair, but both
probably male) are rather territorial - they take half the tank
each, so they need something which will either rule over them
or something which they won't be bothered by, I guess. They have
also grown a bit faster than I expected - now I appreciate this
is quite probably my own fault for getting the research wrong
before I got them. And I like them very much! But I could
do with some advice. (And I can't trust the shop to spot females
so more peacocks probably isn't the answer!)

I'd either like more striped fish, or some other ideas of quite
reasonable sized (i.e. not as small as danios - krib sized is
good) fish that I could add for interest, as all you really see
when you look at the tank is a heap of clowns at one end, a heap
of catfish at the other, two peacocks on patrol, and two tigers
somewhere in the background. The tank is placed in my dining
room so is a focal point and it would be nice to have something
a little more interesting to watch - not necessarily "pretty"
or "dramatic" - something that is a bit of each, if possible.

Suggestions welcome!

PS I am done with tiger barbs. Don't suggest more, please! :-)

In no particular order of preference:
In groups: Giant danios, Rainbowfish (Boesman sized), Scissortail
rasboras, Rosy Barbs (Golden variety is nice), etc
Singletons or pairs: Pictus cat, Leporinus, Anostomus, Headstander,
Acaras, Firemouths, Labedochromis caerelus, P. demanasoni, etc

Depending on how territorial your Peacocks are, you might need to lose
one, or remove both for a few weeks while the new fish get settled in a
reset tank. The more territorial they are, the more you should stay away
from similar fish (ie: cichlids, though I picked some which have a better
than average chance) and go with obviously non-competitive but sturdy
fish (the leporinus), or confuse the Peacocks with numbers (the schooling
fish). You don't mention the Peacock's size (some get to 6") and
whatever you try, it will be ymmv ;~)

ps: Flash, I bet the site hits 10,000 page hits in 2 months. It isn't
your clients generating all that traffic, is it? ;~) I get lots of
compliments on the functional elegance of the tables you set up.

I feel lots of research coming on :-)

Great advice as ever, thanks very much!

They are about ...[goes and measures]...about 3 inches (from about
half that in the shop). And they have a really grumpy expression.

I'd read http://fish.mongabay.com/peacock_cichlids.htm (and similar)
before I got them but I made the mistake of thinking they would be
friendly ;)

Excellent, very pleased to hear it :-) Will mail offlist about it.

I have two male peacocks in my tank and a female (was hoping for a trio...
oh well)
they get along pretty well with the Pr. Taiwan Reef male (who is thier boss)
and the C. Moorii (Blue Dolphins) which are thier boss
they were all in a 200 litre but the dolphins got kinda mean as they got
bigger so now they all live in a 7 footer
the taiwan really did keep them in thier place though, chased them around a
bit but I think that wouldn't have been so bad had there been no women to
fight over...

Thanks very much - I've added that to my list of fish to research,
cheers!

I have done some research now :-)

I very much like the look of leporinus, blue acara, demasoni
and (as someone else suggested) the Taiwan Reef fish.

They were some great suggestions, NetMax! Nice stripeyish fish
which might get along, and of which I can add one or two without
being stuck with loads of huge fish in a few years time.

Much will depend on availability I guess, but given the four
I've said I like, are there any gotchas with any of them?

I think what I'd like to do is get one leporinus - but I'm worried
he will get rather large - and two demasonis - although they might
be a bit too aggressive... What do you think?

I'll also reset the tank and rebuild with a few more rocks, and
pop the peacocks into breeding boxes so they get released when the
new fish do, that might help.

Should liven things up a bit while keeping with the stripe theme.

Won't do it for a couple of weeks (because I'm on holiday soon
and I don't think I should leave the housesitter with new fish)
but I would like any further comments if there are any from anyone!

Of my suggestions, the Leporinus will get the largest and is the most
likely to swim the open water without getting molested, but ymmv
depending on size, order of introduction, reseting interior bla bla bla.

> They were some great suggestions, NetMax! Nice stripeyish fish

Personally, I think that two Peacocks might territorially outgrow a 200
litre tank eventually, as will the Leporinus, but you set the bar there
;~) and the Leporinus will not greatly accelerate their move to a larger
tank. I wouldn't get more than 2 Leps though.

> Much will depend on availability I guess, but given the four
> I've said I like, are there any gotchas with any of them?

If the Acaras survive the Peacocks attention (which is likely with
sufficient shelter) then they would have the smallest territorial
footprint (which would be at its worse when spawning which I find that
they tend to do somewhat easily). The Demasoni I've only had once (about
20 for a few months), and I have the impression that they would be far
too interested in their own affairs close to the bottom to bother or be
significantly bothered by the Peacocks. There are also several striped
Synodontis on the market which would fit your set-up.

> I think what I'd like to do is get one leporinus - but I'm worried
> he will get rather large - and two demasonis - although they might
> be a bit too aggressive... What do you think?

Pound per pound, the Demasoni are the most aggressive (but they are so
small ;~). A pile of rubble in the middle of the tank and you would have
a buffer of sorts between your Peacocks ;~). The Leps have almost zero
interest in anything which they cannot kill and eat (the Peacocks and the
Demasoni & Acara fall into this category), which is good because in terms
of sheer strength, they outclass any of your fish of the same size.

I've probably told this story too often already, but circumstances
required me to move an overly aggressive Peacock (full grown) out of the
100g African tank and into a 100g Oscar tank. He quickly became top
'dog' (Oscars are such babies ;~). A customer brought me a Leporinus
(also about 6" long) which because of the size, I dropped into the Oscar
tank with the Peacock. The result kept me transfixed to the floor for
several minutes.

The Peacock sensing a potential competitor to his alpha status
immediately started aggressively posturing. For the first few minutes,
the completely disoriented Leporinus divided his time between circling
with the Peacock and watching these huge Oscars which were all around
him. Once satisfied that the Oscars were not an immediate threat, he got
a bit more serious with the Peacock, circling and locking lips (I've
never seen any other characin lock lips with a cichlid). The technique
is to circle, lock lips push and repeat, and the Lep easily had more
stamina and strength. Often these fights are won by gall and not
strength, but the Peacock was not losing alpha status so easily and the
Lep was no going to intimidate, whatever the reason. This persisted for
several minutes, as long as the Peacock kept attacking. The Lep
remaining completely on the defensive but never yielding an inch.

They finally broke off the fight and from that point onwards, completely
ignored each other. From the perspective of the rest of the cichlids,
the Peacock remained the alpha male. The Leps don't seem to have a
territorial pecking order with other fish, so he stayed ablivious to the
Peacock, and none of the other fish bothered the Lep either.

> I'll also reset the tank and rebuild with a few more rocks, and

I'd give the new fish a few hours head start.

> Should liven things up a bit while keeping with the stripe theme.

There is also a red-line torpedo barb new on the market (a friend of mine
seen them in the UK and I've now received some myself). I think they get
to 5 inches, similar to the scissortail rasbora, with bright red eyeliner
;~) Perhaps a little expensive to be on a Peacock's menu, if that should
happen.

I went to my fish shop armed with a list including photos in case
the names were slightly different, and an order of preference.

They didn't have many of the fish I liked or that you listed and
weren't doing an order for a few weeks (loads of stock to shift)
so my impatience got the better of me! Ended up with two Taiwan
Reefs (babies, but they are holding their own) and an anostomus
anostomus (one of the horizontally stripey guys.

Spent rather a while resetting the tank (which upset my clown
syno, but she's very easily startled) and it now looks like this:
http://www.gorge.org/fish/pix/latest.jpg (a rather large picture!)
As usual most of the fish are hiding...

The anostomus isn't as boring as I thought; he pokes his head
out from the rocks in a curious manner, and the little Taiwan
Reef chaps are quite independent and being left alone by the
peacocks (hurray!)

Thanks for the advice, I've now got a much improved and interesting
looking tank (and fingers stuck together with rock glue :-)

I've not had Taiwan Reef cichlids yet. The Anostomous are characters.

Rock glue? should I ask? Picture loaded, yup, they are mostly hiding
:o) I'm not sure the pleco in the front is a common plec. Something in
the swirls patterns suggests that it's something else.

A victorian hap? *googles*
Hmm. The two cichlids Ive got in there were labelled peacock...
one is much darker than the other (almost black much of
the time) and the other is slightly larger, bullies, and
has beautiful peacock coloured irridescent fins (so I believed
the labels)... reckon it's summat else?

Yes, two plecs (and a hiding clown syno of similar size).

The first plec was mine (sold with my starter 70l tank, grr!)
The clown syno was a pressie from someone who had no room
(Ive seen them in my local shop for £100+ so I try not
to kill her, but she's mighty shy and I wonder if she eats
enough. Still, it's been several months now...)
The second plec was part of a "please take all my fish" from
a friend (as was the stunted red tail shark who at 1" is
apparently a few years old.) I rehomed some of the fish I was
given but funnily enough no one wants a fat common plec.

They do produce a *lot* of waste. But luckily the plants
eat it. Although the reset tank is light on plants so I
might have to rethink things. The filters cope fine, though.

Ahhhhh yes.

New camera - gone from 1.3 megapixels to 6 megapixels, and I'm
still experimenting with the exposure time to capture fish as
they dart past me. All I had to do was point and click!

>I've not had Taiwan Reef cichlids yet. The Anostomous are characters.

Yep, I'm liking the Anostomus more than I imagined; he's quite
endearing, and I love the way he headstands to eat.

The taiwans are lively, ickle and bugeyed, and seem happy enough
so far. They aren't appreciating my hard crafted caves, though!

>Rock glue? should I ask?

Some black gummy stuff (because my fish move the gravel and then
the rocks fall down, so I decided to bond them) which also bonds
fingers and teacloths and tables.

>:o) I'm not sure the pleco in the front is a common plec. Something in
>the swirls patterns suggests that it's something else.

That's my original one; the other is duller.

When I first had him I tried to count spines and read Baensch
enthusiastically, but I gave up. He's "a pleco" to me. I'd love
to know more about him if you have any ideas, where should I
start reading? I can photograph him (with a 6x zoom!) if you
would like to see more of him. ;-)

By the way, my 3 year anniversary of buying my first tank is
arriving... trying to work out how to celebrate! I can hardly
give the fish party hats and balloons! The only original survivor
is the pleco I mentioned above...

Yep, that's what they look like alright!

The shop still has them labelled as peacocks (I'll tell them
next week). So .. the subject of this thread is wrong!

Thanks very much. I'll correct on my website too.

The Vic. Haps, are a deep water fish, but man do they have some remarkable
colors... the barring can almost disappear and the colors will look like a
rainbow glowing off it's side.... but I've not found many 'quality' pics on
the web... this one is of a juvie..
http://home.fuse.net/fishfarmer/HaplochromisZebraObliqueden1168.jpg his
eyes are bigger than it's stomach... hahaha

The wife laughed at me when I mentioned I had a gmail acct... then she asked
me where she could get one... I told her she had to be special... before I
knew it, "Did they bring it to you on a short, yellow bus?" (over here,
'special' refers to mentally challenged ppl, and I didn't even see that one
coming)... She's a social worker and keeps me on my toes, that's for
sure....

Well, that's exactly what mine look like.

I'll have to take some more fish pix when I've got every bit of algae
off the glass (amazing how it shows up in photos) and when I have more
batteries.. I love my new toy :-) And when you magnify your small fish
up to fullscreen, you can see them much better!

"Special" means that in the UK too - my brother has special needs.
Although we don't have the buses! My partner is something of a
troll and enjoys teasing people that they are "special" - so I
guess he keeps me on my toes, too. :)

Flash, perhaps you should go back and buy some more, it would be worth
trying to breed them, they are an endangered species after all :)

There are still loads in the shop (and they haven't really grown
as big as my two). I did think about getting a lass or two (they
were meant to be a pair but plainly aren't) but the shop can't
tell them apart, nor can I, and they lose any colour as soon as
the net goes in the tank.

They do seem to be leaving other types of fish well alone though
(which is what I was worried about) so it's only their own
territories I need to concern myself with.

But if I got another male by mistake I think I might have a
battle on my hands...

Evan, honestly, is it so terrible that a few posts have been wasted on a
slightly off topic thread? it's not taking space on your computer, if so,
please feel free to killfile me, block me, or just simply ignore me... I
can't help that I sometimes wander off subject, and talk about things that
aren't exactly up to your standards or levels. Heck, this part, it came to
me, I didnt' start it, someone complained about something, I was trying to
clear it up... it's subject line was changed, so if you didn't like it, you
could have chosen to ignore it, but you made the choice to click on it.. you
added to the off topic thread.

I'll stop now, so as to not add to this highly annoying thread....

btw, is something wrong? "you've not been yourself lately"
