Hi,
I`m thinking of starting a tank for some freshwater puffers. Though I am
looking for some advice on tank mates. Though the puffer I am looking are
dwarf puffer (Tetraodon travancoricus). I am thinking along the lines of a
4 or 5 tiger barbs, with a red Tailed Black Shark and possibly a Bristle
Nosed Catfish or similair. All will probably be housed in a 70 to 80 litre
tank.
Any suggestions / feedback on this idea. This is an idea very much in the
concpet phase, pending cost and space etc. Thouigh still any feddback is
appriciated.

I just got my first pair of Dwarf Puffers and did a lot of research
before I bought them. You definately want to keep them on their own.
I've heard they may be ok with some vary fast-semi aggressive fish,
but after seeing them I understand why people say to keep them in a
species only tank.
Just a note too. They are really messy eaters and very aggressive so
they need more room then most fish their size. (About 10 Litres per
puffer) Oh, I just remembered, I hear they do pretty well with Otos.
I think you're really going to like them. They are so funny to watch
and have great personality.

I've had Malabar puffers with ADF (ok), Bettas (didn't notice any
problems), Paradise fish (ok), large Apple snail (they sometimes nip the
snail's trailing edge) and a mix of tetras (ok, they kept to themselves).
Your Tiger barbs might be too much for the puffers. I suspect the
Redtail might be too much with that tank size. No problem with most
plecos.
I don't have the feeling that they are entirely predictable, so variation
may occur by individual and circumstances. Species tanks are better for
less predictable fish. They seem to have the morals of a precocious 4
year old boy. They are not brave enough to bother something which might
fight back, but if they think they can get away with a tiny nip, they
might. Fish which are always active (some tetras), on the bottom
(loaches, plecs), or establishing territorial (some Bettas) would be the
least likely to be bothered. I don't know if Cory barbels would be safe.
They are quite comical, even when they are sizing something up, but
compared to normal puffers, they are very well behaved, but ymmv.
I keep Malabars in a 19 litre and a 75 litre. I actually find the 19
litre works better, as the larger tank has more diversity to potentially
mismatch with them (if that makes sense).
