View Full Version : What happens when a Mollie gets stuck behind the filter?

Hi all,

Had a scare with one of my mollies (who was pregnant, I think! big black
gravid spot) the other night... I went to say hello and couldnt find the
white chicky babe mollie, she was stuck pointing straight down behind the
spongey filter in the corner of the tank.

I got her out and she didnt look too well, she was still moving about but
pretty slowly... In the morning I saw she was swimming at one moment, then
lying sideways on the bottom later... I gave her a little nudge and she got
up and swam around a bit more... Ten minutes later I found her on the bottom
again, nudged again and off she went.

For the next few days she, didnt swim or eat much, just sat in the plants on
the surface and let out a long line of "stuff" which didnt quite look like
poop... :) I'm assuming it may have been the un-made bubbies, as the gravid
spot is all but gone... poor mollie

Today she seems fine, zips around again with the others and has her appetite
back... Im much happier!

The reason I posted this was to;
1. warn any newbies to make sure there is sufficient room behind objects
which fish could get stuck behind...
2. See if anyone may know what happens to a fish when it gets stuck
pointing straight down and cant move...

Anyone got any ideas??

Thanks, Bill

PS Yes I have moved the Filter away from the tank walls..

Long stringy (usually white) poop can be a sign of an internal parisite or
bacterial infection of some sort. Fish affected by these can appear fine and
then just go downhill fast...suggest you keep an eye out.

There is also a fair possibility that the fish was behind the filter
intentionally. When they are not feeling well, other fish will often
harass them (hastening their demise for a free meal), so sick fish often
jam themselves into some corner to escape attention. Don't be too
surprised to find the same fish in some other tight spot.

I'd suggest giving your Mollies some greens (blanched lettuce, zucchini
etc) and if the rest of the community will tolerate it, some salt in the
water wouldn't do any harm (tbsp/5g).

I have a grow out tank that has some baby kribs in it.. there was a time
when the breeding net was still in there, and 2 wedged themselves between it
and the glass... lost all their color... they're ok now, but it sure does
make you hold your breath....

mmmmm

yes maybe your right... she is sitting lips first almost upside down at the
moment, also the silver shark seems to be spending a lot of time at about 30
degrees forward...

The 3 guppies and other 2 mollies seem fine.

Any suggestions on what to proactively treat them with?

I guess it would be hard to guess at without more symptoms...

Starting to feel sad again...
Bill

If it's an internal infection, medicated food for about 10 days could
clear it, I have made good experience with TetraMedica (which contains
the antibiotic tetracyclin).
