Oscar Update

Following my postings in two other threads I thought I would give some
feed back.

No-one thinks it was HITH. The good news is that the whitish shiny patches
are not even evident tonight so things have improved there.

I'll be keeping my tank at 0.1% salt solution for the next while and after
that will let it gradually reduce through the regular water changes.

I have to say that all the fish look more vital since the first two water
changes and the salt has been added. In addition I have started a better
food regimen. I have ordered some beef-heart (ox-heart actually) which I
will get tomorrow. I will be making up a beef-heart mix and then freezing
it.

I know this can be a messy food and am planning on feeding it 3 times a
week depending on how the fish like it - Bi weekly water changes and
gravel vac should take care of this. I shoudl also like to add some
additional mechanical filtration.

Hi Trev

If your going to be feeding beefheart you will need to do at least a weekly
water change and vac. Dont feed three times a week straight away, as this
is such a high protein feed and messy your bio filter wont deal with the
waste straight away. Feed maybe once a week for a couple of weeks, they up
to two a week. Keep the feeds small though. Another great food for oscars
is fish, not live but fresh fish from the market. Cut into slices / chunks
and feed them that. Dont use oily fish, get cod or whiting etc. If you
use marine fish like that then you are less likely to get a parasite on them
that will infect your fish, they cant live in fresh water. Dont mince the
meat or fish, this only clouds the water, cut them into bite sized cubes,
less mess and easier to feed.

Well I used up my last bit of cichlid pellets in the mix (beefheart,
prawns, chicken liver, peas, spinach) so for two days they got only
beefheart!

I have cut back and will do the once a week and build up with plebty of
gravle vacs and water change.

Well due to this being a mix and having other smaller fish cubes might not
be possible. But will be trying to mince all the stuff up less next batch
as it does cloud the water a little very temprarily.
