Hello,

I've had my 50g aquarium set up for about 5 years and now I am planning on
taking everything out and setting it up again. I have few fish and they
will stay in a smaller aquarium for a while. My question is: would I
benefit from saving some (25 - 50%) of the water from the aquarium and
putting it back in after I set it up. Would that cycle the tank faster?
Would bacteria survive for a couple of days in the water outside of aquarium
or would they die from lack of food and oxygen.

TIA

the bacteria will die off if there's no flow or oxygen given... but, what's
better, take your own advice and keep some water, more like 10%, and some
gravel, and the filter cartridges/media, and put in that saved water.. don't
let it sit out for a week though... a day won't hurt it... when setting it
back up, putting the gravel and water in will seed the new tank, but will
still take a couple days for your bacteria to start back up and multiply
enough to the new tank....

If i were you, i'd put the filters in the smaller tanks and keep them
running. (perhaps even overfeed that tank a little.)

reserving old water can be good, but if you have to do alot to
accomplish it, the filters should be fine.

(they've been in my experience anyway...)

Thanks. I guess I will do that. Put the four filter sponges and some sand
into a large bucket of used aquarium water and add some aeration. It would
be better to put the whole filter into another container but mine is fixed
inside the aquarium so all I can do is take out the media. Once I fill up
the aquarium I will also add a small internal filter which is already
running and has been purchased just for this purpose. It should help a
little.
