View Full Version : Blue Dwarf Gourami's Drop Dead

I have a question. I have been through numerous turquoise/powder blue dwarf
gouramis and they all end up dead in two weeks. They appear to be doing
fine but then I just find them dead one day. No symptoms or signs of
stress. Can anyone think of a reason why this is happening and only to my
blue dwarfs? I have pearl, opaline, and the closely related Giant (Colisa
faciata) gouramis and they are doing fine. The other gouramis do not bother
the dwarfs. Though I caught a black sword tail harassing/ nipping the dwarf
gourmi a few times.

Tank: 55 Gal
Water is fine no NH3/NO2 acceptable NO3

It could possible be your giant or opaline gourami's that are causing your
problem. The opalines are pretty nippy for gourami's and can be bad
tempered. Dwarf gourami's arent as robust as most other gourami's and can
suffer from lack of food. The other fish in the tank will be eating like
mad and the dwarfs will be left with scraps.

Your tank wont hold those two giant gourami for long though. They get huge
pretty fast.

Actually I have Colisa faciata, they don't grow bigger than 5 inches. You
were probably thinking the also named Giant Gourami, Osphronemus gorami. In
any case The faciatas are fairly peaceful and never bother other species
Though the two I have minor quarrels infrequently with feeler prodding and
kissing but only with each. The Opalines also only bother each other with
chasing happening somewhat infrequently. My tank has enough decorations and
hiding spots that everyone can leave eachother alone most of the time.

I have had some trouble with the dwarfs (mostly the powder blues or
other engineered fish) myself. I almost wonder if it has something to
do with the breeders because some of them die within the first week
while others live to a ripe old age. When you next visit your LFS ask
them about who they get theirs from and what the die off is. Also ask
them about their customers returns.

I lost my first fish earlier this week, almost 3 months into my first tank.
And yes, it was a Blue Dwarf Gourami - christened Quasimodo by my daughter
Charlotte (6). He'd been in there for 2 months, along with a female D.G.
(Esmeralda, of course!) and had been as happy as Larry until 10 days ago.

He was eating fine but had started to drift, rather than swim, around the
tank, only "properly" swimming in occasional spurts when the need arose, and
I noticed then that his tail seemed to be pointing slightly to his left most
of the time. He then started to rest-up for long periods at the front,
bottom right-hand corner of the tank, up against the glass, behind a clump
of Java Fern. This gave me the chance to examine him and I found nothing
visual to aid any diagnosis, other than his strange behaviour. And he was
still feeding enthusiastically.

Then on Monday of this week he stopped feeding, barely moving from one spot
all day. He was still breathing, so there's always a chance, I thought. My
LFS confirmed to me that my water parameters are nigh on perfect for my
communal tank and all the other occupants are doing just fine, so I just
*had* to give him the chance to recover.

Unfortunately, after feeding time on Tuesday morning, I left for work
knowing I was fighting a losing battle. Sorry. Did I say fighting? I
actually did bugger-all to help him because there was nothing I could do.
Untold hours of surfing websites simply told me that this type of fish are
prone to unknown ailments and an early death. I felt so helpless and would
have gladly paid to have had him put right. Tuesday evening he was finally
put out of his misery. I had a tear in my eye and my daughter was
distraught.

Nobody told me it would be this hard to part with a mere fish.

About four years ago, I bought a powder blue gourami and he died two
days later. I returned him to the store (which had a policy of
replacing a fish who died within a week, if you brought back the body
and a sample of the tank water). The sales clerk said the powder blues
were usually not as healthy as the regular dwarf gouramis (with the
red and blue stripes), so I got a regular one as replacement and he
lived for almost two years.

You could try the regular dwarf gourami to see if you have better
luck. In my opinion they are just as beautiful as the other ones,
anyway.
