The Filter on my 29g Freshwater tank just died, and i have 5 hours til
the LFS opens. I have already tried "jump starting" my filter by
refilling the resivoir. but the water just goes into the tank. I have
2 air pumps (with fresh battaries) going, each can sustain a 20 Gallon
tank. So aeration is not really a problem. The filter is a Top Fin 30.
I was wondering If I could get another Top FIn 30 and just put the old
(cycled) filter pad in the new filter. The Fish look pretty good, now
atleast. What should I do over the next five hours, so that paramiters
like ammonia and nitrite don't start rising? I am will to do anything.
Like I said earlier, all the LFS's bby me are closed (it's 5:15 AM).
Please if anyone could help me out, I would be so grateful!

Inhabitants: (all fully grown unless noted otherwise.)
2 Khuli Loaches
4 Cory cat
3 Assorted Angelfish
1 Pleco (still about 3.5)
1 Pearl Gourami
1 Platinum Gourami
1 Snakesking Gourami

Thanks for Looking,
Evan Davis

Hi,
If you have an established tank, you will be OK in 5 hours.
If you start to get concerned or do see any levels in that time (which I
doubt) just do a water change.

I've had power cuts for quite a few hours and the main thing I was worried
about was my water temp, not the filtration.

Hope that helps

A

I'm not familiar with your filter but a reasonable precaution would be
remove the media & put it into the tank ( in a stocking or in a breeder net)
to allow water flow around it until you get the new filter. This combined
with an airstone should give you a few extra hours.

Upon talkting with someone at the LFS, they suggested I clean the
impeller to ensure it is working fine, I cleaned the impeller and the
fillter is now working great. I'm happy it was such an easy fix, i was
worried the motor burned out.

good idea, what your could do though is wrap the filter media around an
airline. put into a stocking. the air flow inside the media will act like
the uplife of and undergravel filter. keep the media going as well as
acting like a make-shift filter.
