Recently added 2 clown loaches to our 25gal tank which already had 6 mollies
and 7 guppies.
3 of the mollies were born in dec 2003 and i noticed one of the little ones
had a huge chunk of tail missing! Nurtured and cared for he is on the mend
now but then I've recently had one of the adults mollies being found at the
surface with tail missing (as well as other bits).
Are the loaches capable of this - they are VERY intense come feeding time
and I wonder if they've caused damage to the others???

Yep, I believe so. I've a tank with Guppies/Loaches and have noticed
lots of tailfin damage on males, more than I'd attribute to the damage
they would do themselves.

I had the same issues, guppys with missing tails... with loaches present in
the tank... Come to find out, when feeding, the loaches could not decipher
between food and guppy... Sometimes, the loaches got a guppy tail instead of
a bite of food...

My goodness, could this explain the missing tails of my hatchet fish..? I
suspected the African butterfly... could it be the clown loaches?? I never
would have suspected them, considering they live in completely different
spheres of the tank, and ...... well I always considered them peaceful and
not a tail nipper at all... The African butterfly does seem half blind and
launching at "shadows" at feeding time, so I really suspected him as the
culprit!
I moved the hatchet fish once I found the first one with tail missing. But
the clowns?? could it really be...?

In my 75 gallon tank I have 15 species totaling 60 fish. Six are
Clown Loaches. In one 10 gallon tank I have two CLs with some live
bearers and a 29 gallon with 4 CLs. I checked just now to be sure,
but none of my fish have nipped fins. I have never seen a CL mistake
another fish for food and I do enjoy their aggressiveness in getting
to the food. Not proof of innocence for your Clowns, but a caution in
reaching a verdict.

I wouldn't have believed it had there been any other reason... the only fish
in the tank were loaches and gupps...

Oh, the mysteries of life. I have a game I play with myself, I
pretend I have a list of questions which will never be answered. I
will add this to the list. <g>
