OK, as mentioned in previous posts, I have replaced my Topfin 10 with a
Penguin 125 on friday night. After a couple days (since sunday/monday) I am
already getting some overflow back through the inlet tube area. Is this
normal for it to happen so quickly??

Marcel

PS - I also found out why my old top-fin died. The impeller was surrounded
by this green slimy crud. Once I cleaned it off, it worked fine. Now I know
and have a back-up filter.

Marcel... Just a quick observation... Your PS answered your own post... the
green slimy stuff is probably filling your penguin 125 up in short order...
It, if I'm not mistaken, is where the filter can't keep up and the green
stuff is produced at a hugely different rate than the filter can break it
down....( just a guess, but similar happened to me) I had a 29g, over
stocked, and the filter was really only rated for a 25g tank, with moderate
stockings... Not sure what it was called, but the slimy stuff isn't bad,
it's just a buildup of detrius/waste and hasn't been broken up 'by' the
filter yet... IMO, if you added the old filter in for a while, that green
stuff would go away... In other words, your penguin 125 isn't enough either,
if I'm correct...

The only thing is, I have the P125 (rated for 30 gallons) on my 10 gallon
tank. Is it perhaps just that the bio-filter isn't up to speed yet??

yep.. could be... but when it happened to me, it was that I was
underfiltered....rather, not up to speed.. I think it can be attributed to
your new filter, not being able to deal with the 'stuff' it's been given....
keep up the cleaning and it'll catch up eventually....

If there is a lot of junk in the water it could happen.
First off do a 10% water change. Rinse out the filter cartridge in the
bucket with the old water.

Let me ask a couple of questions Marcel.
Is this green slime all over the inside of the tank and decor or just
in the filter? Is the water green? Could it be a algae bloom?

When you do water changes do you vacuum the gravel?
How many and what type of fish are in this tank?

Any live plants in the tank?

Does the tank get any direct sunlight?

How long is the light on every day?

It might be an algae bloom. The water is not green, but there has been a
little upsurge in the green on the glass of the tank.

> When you do water changes do you vacuum the gravel?

Always. The gravel vacuum is how I change the water.

> How many and what type of fish are in this tank?

There are cuurently 9 fish in the tank. 3 Otto cats (although I am not
sure if they are all alive. They tend to hide and blend in pretty good
with the gravel), 2 orange platy's and 4 bloodfin tetra's.

> Any live plants in the tank?

Nope. In theory the tank is my wife's. In practicality, the tank is mine.

> Does the tank get any direct sunlight?

It is next to a window that faces west. It gets direct sunlight for a 1
or 2 hours a day, at the end of the day.

> How long is the light on every day?

About 10-12 hours a day. I usually turn it on in the morning, and turn it
off when I go to bed at night. In theory, the wife is supposed to turn it
off when she leaves for work, but she rarely remembers.

Thanks

Marcel
