View Full Version : What to put in an 8 Gallon tank?

My girlfriend has an 8 gallon tank that we are trying to decide what
to stock. My tank has platies and swordtails, so we would like
something different in hers. She's had goldfish and would like
something different this time.

The 8 gallon tank has an eclipse power filter, a light on a timer, and
I will be getting it a heater soon (50 watt). I think we'd probably
like something colorful and hardy, as the 8 gallons don't give us a
lot of room for error. Some ideas I've had:

8 small tetras (neon, cardinal)
2 mollies (too delicate?)
4 guppies (young will be a problem. All male?)

Any ideas for an 8 gallon tank? Are there any really small ciclids we
could fit a pair of in a tank this small?

A small school of Harlequin Rasboas (Rasboa Hets)? Tough & long-lived, and
they're fun to watch in a school. Start with one or two while you cycle the
tank, then up the school to six or so (I'd start with six, then possibly
increase to as much as 8 if the water parameters looked stable after a few
months).

Hi.

I've been converted into a *huge* fan of threadfin rainbows. They are
amazing to watch interact, especially if you have a group of males with
only 1 female. These fish barely reach more than 1", so you could
probably have a small group of 6 in your aquarium.

My LFS got a small shipment of dicrossus filamentosus cichlids (may be d.
maculatus, I've had a heck of a time finding out info on either type), and
these only get ~2". You could probably keep a pair of these, if you can
find them.

I agree on the threadfin rainbow. After finding them only two weeks ago, I
watched them and grown more and more fond of them. A very elegant and sleek
body combined with the unique fins which they flash at eachother when
"meeting", just a brief interval of "mine are bigger than yours" :-) -
lovely, beautiful and peaceful fish!

I've fallen in love almost as much as I fell in love with the Zebra plecos
first time I saw them :-D
