View Full Version : sunset gourami problem

One of my sunset dwarf gouramis seems to be ill. It sits on the bottom of
the tank and hides between plants and a rock. It hasn't come out to feed
since the day before yesterday. It looks OK - I've looked at it thru a
magnifying glass and can't see any obvious problems. All other tank mates,
including the other sunset gourami, are fine. Both gouramis are males and
I've had them about a month. I've had the tank up and running well for 4
months. I do regular water changes of 20-30% and I've added about 2
tablespoons of aquarium salt to the tank.
Here are the tank particulars:
29g tank with lots of plants
ammonia=0
nitrites=0
nitrates=40 or less
pH is between 7.2 and 7.8
KH=80
GH=150-300
temp=80 deg F
3 female platys
5 peppered cory cats
8 male guppies
2 male dwarf sunset gouramis

Any advice is welcome because I don't know what to do.

I've heard that gouramis don't do well together, especially of their own
kind... that being said, I could only have male/female pairs in my tanks, no
other male would be accepted, or female for that matter...

The gourami died this evening but I still don't know why. the body looked OK
and the gills were OK as far as I could tell. Would bullying by the other
gourami cause this-even though I never saw evidence of this?

Absolutely possible. I had two goramis and one did the other in...stress
and being kept from food. No fight marks or other problems were apparent.

Yep... stress is what did mine in too... was never caught, but was
constantly chased, unless it was hiding...

sorry...
